2001: Translucent plum. Patchy, dusty white foam. Candyish, estery aroma of anise, spice cake, gooey caramel, dates, black cherry, apple, toasted coconut, and iron. Faint musty notes of chocolate, sherry, molasses, and noble-like hops. Velvety carbonation. Medium bodied. Mildly acidic and oxidized flavors. Initial acidic rush is proceeded by assorted tropical fruits, pine, medicine, and fruit cake. Finishes with a crystal malt overload alongside a moderately coarse bitter edge, slight medicinal astringency, sugared malt backing, and a subtle blend of caramel and cocoa. Beneath the acidity lies a myriad of well-placed flavors and stunningly accurate Old Ale complexity. Moreover, the oxidative qualities are showcased in the aroma and flavor profiles to perfection. Sadly the acidity overrides most of its attributes, rather than complementing them. Yet another gem.
