Commercial Description:
The Southampton Publick House now occupies the space that was once Herb McCarthy's Bowden Square Restaurant. Herb McCarthy's was the place to be in the Hamptons for more than two generations. Those who remember him still speak fondly of "old Herb", who held court at Bowden Square from 1936-1986. He was rarely seen without his Chef's coat and trademark kerchief.

2005 bottle purchased at beers of the world in rochester, NY. #230/500 i think? pours a dark orange amber with more carbonion than i was expecting, as bubbles nearly rose out of the bottle. quite dry for a barley wine, and even though there seem to be a good amount of residual sugar it’s quite thin as well. the 11% is apparent, as it seems to be more of a blend of melted caramel, whiskey, and hops. bitter, dry finish that doesn’t linger in any particularly favorable way....

Bottles courtesy of Pailhead and Mullman. Pours brown/mahogany with film for head. Aroma full of citrus hops and alcohol. Faint caramel background. Flavor very sweet, residuel sugars, caramel malt, and some more alcohol burn. Hops don’t kick in til finish, but has long bitter aftertaste.

BW tasting at Dumdum’s, Late March 2005. Bought at Beers of the World, oct. 2004. Beautiful red copper robe with cherry hues and an off-white head. Good carbonation. Aroma of sweet malt, cloves and mint, with nice alcohol wafting though. In mouth, sweet candy sugar, vinous , but very harsh hops, astringent. Licorice notes noted. Thin bodied BW, where the alcohol is too noticeable.

Devil’s Night At Mullman’s. Bottle #346/500. Hazy amber color with a small off white head. Sweet malty, caramel aroma with a nice hoppy background. Well balanced flavor of sweet caramel malt and bitter citrus hops. Alcohol is hardly noticeable.

Devils night at Mullmans: 2005. Pours a medium amber and slightly cloudy with a nice off white head. Lots of sweet caramel and light citrus hops in the aroma. Caramel malts, along with a light breadiness, and moderately bitter. Very smooth even when young.

Strong nose like Bigfoot: fresh hop with a big malt aroma, hits of cherry. Ruddy amber color with a sticky head. Berry, honey, caramel, syrup. Peppery end - like a chili pepper. Hops come through creating a cinnamon effect. Chewy body. Great balance and a powerful beer. Everything is in place on this one.

Bottle: Courtesy of Shadey via trade and Styles. 2005 bottle. Aroms is very citrusy and hoppy with some light alcohol present. Pours a cloudy reddish-orange with a small off-white head. Malty flavors up front of caramel, banana bread, and light fruit. Finishes moderately citrusy and lightly hoppy. Not as hoppy as I expected based on the aroma. In general the flavors are nice, but not as big and bold as I expect in a barley wine.
