Commercial Description:
The Southampton Publick House now occupies the space that was once Herb McCarthy's Bowden Square Restaurant. Herb McCarthy's was the place to be in the Hamptons for more than two generations. Those who remember him still speak fondly of "old Herb", who held court at Bowden Square from 1936-1986. He was rarely seen without his Chef's coat and trademark kerchief.

Bottle 174 / 500, not sure on the year (bought in Brooklyn in 4/05). Nice ruby copper body. Thin off-white creamy head. Nice malty aroma, seeming complex subtleties all over the place. A touch of grapefruit hop. Coating, bright/bitter fruit. Nice sweet malty caramel and raisin backing it up. Cocoa finish on the tongue.

2005 - Bottle 104/500: Nice amber color with a big white frothy head . Intense and luscious nose: Grapes, plums, malt, coffee and hops a go go - with a slight tucked away but not unpleasant moldy hint. Long lasting frutiy and intense biting taste accomplished by a pepper and cloves finish.

2003 bottle 147/500. Poured a murky orange-brown color with little carbonation. I had to pour straight into the glass from a good distance away to get any head. Sweet thick malty aroma of toffee, sugar, flesh of an orange, and alcohol. Sweet, malty, and fruity with a bitter finish with some alcohol flavor and warming. Full bodied, tasty and aging well.

2003. Bottle 231/500. Hazy amber with virtually no head, just a small ring of tiny bubbles. Chewy, malty aroma of toffee, licorice, raisins, pine, whole grains, earthy hops, oxidation and big pieces of wheat bread. The body is full, slightly oily and smooth. The low carbonation is spot on. Starts sweet and robustly malty at the beginning. The layers of sweetnes and toasted character provide depth. As the beer moves through the top and starts to come down the back, a fairly intense bitterness shows up, even after two years in the cellar. The bitterness is fairly indescript and seems to be more noble and grassy, not the crazy pine, grapefruit or citrus that seems to be so dominate. The finish is long and warm, with the bitterness slowing mellowing out to allow the alcohol to take over. I probably waited a little too long for to drink this, but it’s still pretty damn tasty.

vintage 2004.
