Big caramel aroma with hops, malt and toffee. Color is a murky brown. Flavor is thick and syrupy with a strong alcohol kick. Tons of malts and a touch of hops. More caramel and sweetness. Finish is thick and coating and warms nicely as it goes down. A decent barleywine but could use some more hops to offset the the thick malt palate and alcohol. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA

Hefty, minimal carbonation, ruddy and sedimented. Mucho malty, thick and molassesy malt. High hop acidity. DaSilky1 is right on in the resiny comment. JCB (1799), Durham, North Carolina, USA

Man, apparently I’ve been sitting on this one for a while and I figured I’d get to it before oxidation, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see some creamy foam rising through the bottle as soon as I popped the cap. Vigorous pour, super cloudy orange body. Makes you feel like a Viking supping this from a chalice. Anyways, soft nutty notes in the nose, with some hops and sweet malts. Slightly dry taste in there, maybe something a bit spicy, reminds me a bit of stale basil or mild ginger/anise. Very nice, whatever it is. I suppose this is an English style barleywine, but with a seriously improvisational bent to it. All to the good, and a lovely beer. ryan (1781), Beltsville, Maryland, USA

Cloudy, muddy amber with a large beige head. Sugary, caramel, cotton candy nose shows some oxidations, but it doesn’t take away from the beer. Some golden fruits in the nose as well. Moderately sweetness is well balanced against a decent bitterness. The hop character is mostly on the piny spectrum, with a touch of citrus. Heavy, dense caramel and toffee fight with a moderate amount of oxidized malt. Full body is soft and chewy with moderate carbonation. shp555 (1776), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
