GAManiac (340), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2008 2006 bottle, #255/500. Pours a super hazy orange amber with only a minimal head even with an aggressive pour. The head dissipates to a collar quickly leaving traces of lacing. The smell is really boozy, mainly rum, with some brown sugar and toffee in the nose as well. There is also the faintest hint of hops in the background. The taste is also sugary sweet with brown sugar and caramel malts with vanilla and some spices as well. The mouthfeel is full and super smooth with low carbonation. I’ve never had this one fresh, but I really enjoyed this beer and I imagine I probably caught it at about the right age. Thanks again to Steve for pulling this out of the cellar for me!
SuzyGreenberg (1028), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 30, 2008 12 oz. bottle - 2006 bottle; thanks to after4ever for sharing; very hazy, glowing orange; quite a bot of sediment; huge, rich aromas of sugar, alcohol, musky; buttery texture and very smooth; much hotter on the second sip; flavors mainly of oranges and a little spice; lovely texture, just not quite there flavor wise; pretty nice though Ibrew2or3 (1756), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Sep 15, 2008 Big thanks to after4ever for bringing this along. This 2006 vintage poured orange to copper with light haze and off white ring of foam. The aroma is muted blunted pine hops, light dark fruitiness, a bit of fruity mustiness, some yeasty notes and heat near the end of the draw. The taste begins smooth and grows to bold notes starting with pine hops that are muted with age. I get a hint of dark fruitiness peaking out from behind the pine hops. Maybe another year will do it well. Sure did enjoy it with a couple of years on it. Thanks Tom. JCB (1061), Durham, North Carolina, USA Sep 6, 2008 12oz bottle (2005) from MaxxDaddy - thanks, Max! Man, apparently I’ve been sitting on this one for a while and I figured I’d get to it before oxidation, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see some creamy foam rising through the bottle as soon as I popped the cap. Vigorous pour, super cloudy orange body. Makes you feel like a Viking supping this from a chalice. Anyways, soft nutty notes in the nose, with some hops and sweet malts. Slightly dry taste in there, maybe something a bit spicy, reminds me a bit of stale basil or mild ginger/anise. Very nice, whatever it is. I suppose this is an English style barleywine, but with a seriously improvisational bent to it. All to the good, and a lovely beer. thenick (583), North Bellmore, New York, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle - 2006 Vintage, many thanks to Brady from SPH for this one. Pours a bronze/amber color with a fluffy white head. Aroma is heavy spice and malt, with notes of chocolate, ginger, and candi sugar noticeable. Taste is spice as well, with ginger and candi sugar noticeable. There is a slight alcohol burn at the end, but it is very well hidden for a beer with this high an ABV. I sipped on this beer for a good long time, and it provided a very enjoyable experience.
