From a 64 oz growler. Dark brown-black beer with a thick tan head. The aroma is very coffeeish with soft rich chocolate and caramelly maltiness. Great sweet maltiness, caramel and toast with soft toffee, licorice and bittersweet chocolate. Earthy hoppiness on the back. Soft roastiness with a touch of lingering roastiness. Light fruitiness on the back along with the coffee/espresso roastiness. Very enjoyable brew.

Tap @ Southampton Publick House. Pours a deep brown to almost black with a thin brown head. Aroma is dominated by chocolate but balanced by a slight hint of coffee and roasted malt as well. The flavor is very smooth with a strong chocolate character. Very smooth porter, well done.

On tap at Hop Devil. Aroma has slight roast, and, err, nacho cheese? Yeah, kinda. Smooth and mellow in the mouth, not quite dry enough for my tastes (or what I think it was trying to achieve). Right in theme with the rest of the SH beers of the night, this came across too vegetal.

Poured a dark brown, with reddish hints around the outside, medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel malts, and some vanilla bean. Taste of more chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, light vanilla, and a faint bitterness in the finish. Solid porter here.

sampled at the brewpub. very dark brown with some light brown highlights near the bottom of the sample glass. In the nose I got some chocolate, and light sweet malts. Taste is lightly roasty, a light hop bitterness throughout with coffee, caramel, and chocolate. nice porter.

On tap at the SPH. Pours a deep opaque brown with a thin tan head that lasted through about half the glass. Very pleasant aroma of roasted malt and coffee. The flavor starts off a tad sweet with caramel and chocolate flavors. The coffee flavor comes and brings you to the finish along with some mild bitterness. More flavor than many stouts I have tried with the proper body for a porter.

Sampled at the Great American Beer Festival in NYC (2006). I wasn’t impressed with this. Pours a deep brown with small tan head. The aroma is mocha-ish, burnt coffee. The body is a bit thin for a porter, and the flavor is mainly burnt. A touch of oateyness, a bit of an oiley flavor. The finish is long & has a bitter roastyness. Not one of Southampton’s better ones.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2006 On tap (growler sample) from Half Time Beverage in Poughkeepsie. Very dark brown, but not even close to motor oil body with a moderate sized tan head. Huge coffee aroma. Not like Peche Mortal, (or even close) but for a Porter this is the biggest one I’ve ever had. Add some roast with a hint of chocolate and caramel as well. Flavor is the same with light bitterness. Very drinkable, but perhaps a slightly thin mouthfeel. But for a porter... wow. I’ll take this over their Imperial Porter any day.

Dark brown with a generous head. Aromas not surprising of bakers chocolate and toffee. Nice roasty malt beginning to end. Light to medium mouthfeel and smooth as glass. This is what I expect from an exceptional porter.

On tap at Tap New York. Deep dark brown in color with a nice head. Roasty and malty aroma. Caramel and chocolate notes. Nice roasty flavor. Sweet tasting. Some bitterness. Full bodied. Flavor is roasty with chocolate notes. Enjoyable beer.
