hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 9, 2008 bottle. pours a clear pale gold with a huge white head that fades halfway pretty quickly, but slows down, and leaves huge chunks of lacing as it goes. nutty malt smell with a lot of coriander, which does a good job hiding the fresh spring morning backdrop that the yeast are trying to create. light fruit (oranges, white grapes, pears, and apples) notes occasionally reveal themselves, but the spice is too assertive for them to play a big role. in the taste, the nutty malt is again the dominant component, and again the spice ruins what appears like it would be a pretty solid ester profile. light, dry finish, some bitterness from the spice, and a bit of some hop bitterness, very little sweetness, fairly light body, kind of a surprising resinous mouthfeel. rather astringent. very bubbly. i didn’t really notice much in the way of tartness, and there’s no noticeable brett, either. it’s a good beer, though my tone might suggest otherwise. i am just personally tired of the beers where the yeast might create a unique and wonderful character but they kill it with too much spice. still, every fan of belgian golden ales ought to give it a try.
joshwilfong (486), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 25, 2008 hazy golden with huge white head. light body feel. the yeast dominates this beer and makes it very good, providing a complex tartness with a nice dry finish. great version, top beer i have had from southampton Magic_dave6 (3536), London, England Jul 22, 2008 Bottle at the RBESG08 Grand tasting. Alround rating: Spicey peppery orange, big yeasty stery presence. Exactly what i expect in a saison. Ibrew2or3 (1613), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jul 20, 2008 Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours deep gold with a bit of haze and white head. The aroma is apples nearing an orange sensation along with spice and some candi sugar. The taste is sweet apples moving into lemon tartness along with spices and yeasty notes. It ends just about bone dry with a lingering mixture of apples and lemons and faint hay. ogivlado (2193), Zagreb, Croatia Jul 11, 2008 Bottled(750ml). -RBESG2008, Grand Tasting.
