Notes from my backlog: Hazy deep brown/amber pour with a creamy tan film of head. The aroma is chocolaty, toasted toffee, mild toasted coconut, hint of tobacco. Creamy body wit ha toasted flavor of chocolate- quite malty with a peaty toasted coconut note. Deep rich caramel. Pretty nice.

Dark brown pour with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel malts, toffee, and some dark fruits. Flavor is caramel, roasted malt, sugar and some fruitiness. Really sweet. Okay.

Bottle thanks to Brooha.   Deep caramel, dark and dirty, large foamy head, off-white, nice lacing.   Hmmm, I get this odd aroma of grape tootsie roll pop.   Some carob like chocolate and artifical grape fruitiness.   Oh yeah, grape like tootsie roll pop on the tongue.   Malty, moderate sweetness, carob, and this fake grape like tootsie roll pop flavor.   Malty from start to finish.   Somewhat of an odd duck.   Did I mention grape tootsie roll pop?   Fairly full bodied, smooth.   Sum this one up as an odd duck, not what I was expecting whatsoever for a Scotch Ale.   Thanks to Brooha for this odd freebie!

Murky dark brown, a thin ring, not much head... Aroma is lots of caramel, a little hops, very sweet scotch... Tastes like a barleywine, way to sweet, boring

Bottle: The aroma consists of toffee, candied fruit, grape, and faint smoke. It pours a mostly transparent reddish-browb with a two finger off-white head. The flavor starts with toffee and candied fruit. The finish has notes of caramel, chocolate, and a touch of smoke. Medium bodied with somewhat soft carbonation.

Can’t even remember where I got this bottle. It accompanied me to several tastings, never consumed, so I put it out of its mercy. Turned out to be a decent, but not overwhelming Scotch. Slightly oily russet pour, with a faded, rocky head that leaves a good bit of sticky lacing. Nose is quite fragrant, with tons of bright fruit, salted nuts, peat, and caramel. Body is nicely lively, always appreciated for this style, which can get weighed down. Lots of smoke and brown sugar blending with the peat and caramel in the taste. There’s an interesting woody dry note in there too, giving this more of an earthy quality than some other examples. Pretty good.

(Old BA rate - tap)
Translucent, deep coppery color with ruby red highlights; rich looking slightly off-white finger of foam; solid head retention. Aroma of lightly sweet maltiness; whiff of dark grapes. Sweet maltiness dominates, but the grape-like fruitiness is a little odd and a bit much. Thinner to Medium; decent enough body and expected for the style. Just OK; interesting at points, but the grape-like flavors really made this nearly a chore to finish. Overall, this brew looked beautiful, but didn’t really deliver the rest of the way. Not bad by any stretch
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 RCL (2029) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 5, 2010
Found a Southampton beer that was less than stellar, that was a first! This was rather light on the palate- surprising for a 7.5% brew. The flavor was rather simple just some caramel with a whiff of smoke.

’09 bottle. Dark chestnut, thick cream head. Nose is heavy caramel malt, some light sugar, also faint wood. The flavor has heavy wood and malt, nicely balanced and dry but also sweet enough to enjoy enough of. There is no presence of lactose that can perturb scotch ales. This is drinking great right now, really enjoyed the wood.
