2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Overly sweet, nutty, with a wicked butter maltiness that threw the whole pint out of whack. Smells slightly mildewy, with a overly sweet caramel undertone. Looks decent, but the color is more red than brown. The taste starts out well enough, with a darkly sweet initial burst of malt, but the mildew from the nose follows through to the flavor, acrid and wholly unwelcome. Good thing the Barbecued Meatloaf was frigging delicious. (9/08)

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep, red-tinted brown with very sticky lacing. Med. aroma of toasted nuts and autumnal notes. Round & medium-bodied malty nutty palate. This would be a decent fall beer--not too heavy on the palate.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 12/20
Although served in a 5 oz. tasting glass, it maintained a a blanket of lace throughout the meal. The color was light brown and it was crystal clear.
Dark crystal malts define the aromas of this beer. Some nuttiness--little hop.
The taste is, again, a malty affair. However, the swallow through aftertaste features a surprising hop bite. Like most of Southendís beers, this one is too thin for the style. The flavor wins out, overall.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Tasted at the Southend Brewery & Smokehouse. Alright - I was pumped to try this place all week while I was in Charleston and I dragged the whole family there - what a let down. I tried the 8 beer sampler and they went 0-8 on this one. This beer looked, smelled and tasted like dirty dishwater. WTF?

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Oh wow! Delicious caramel aroma and flavor. Dark brown opaque pour
with thin tan head. Toffee and coffee notes. Smooth mouthfeel. No more
words for this one. Yes its that good.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
This is a watery beer and the slightly nutty, slight chocolatey malt in the aroma is just a tease. This is just a dark light beer by taste.

0.8 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 2/20
Amber- brown colour. The aroma is big nasty diacetyl. This blows off a little bit, eventually, revealing a hint of chocolate. That gives me hope...which is quickly dashed. The body is watery and has a dirty dishwater character to it. And thereís still a lot of diacetyl. Catastrophic technical problems.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Brown a tad cloudy off white head. Smooth brown malt flavor with a malty nose. Good thick mouthfeel and no off flavors in the finish

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft. Rich malty brown color and nose. Smells of caramel as well. Nice clean tasting brown with some good malt/hop balance. Good sweetness in the finish. Biting carbonation keeps everything very clean. My favorite beer from this less than spectacular brewery.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A nice dark brown ale. Emphasis on the dark, and thereís not as much in the nose as Iíd hope for. However, itís quite pleasant in the taste department, and the palate is smooth and silky. One of their better offerings.
