12oz can from Whole Foods. Deep, dark brown pour with mahogany highlights. Head recedes to a tan ring around the glass. Aroma of heavily roasted chocolate malt, slight sweetness and day-old coffee. Tastes of bitter coffee, baker’s cocoa, caramel, hint of vanilla and licorice. Fine carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Thin to medium body. Trailing bitter finish ends too quickly. However, matures nicely as it warms.

Decent enough nose to start with, though a little light in color with a lively head, But in the mouth, it is way too sweet. I am a malt lover, but this seemed to have no balance at all.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2010 ( 12oz can) pours near black with huge tan head and great lacing. Nose of dark fruit, dark chocolate, yeast, and oats. Taste of roastiness, bakers chocolate, coffee with cream, and rolled oats. Body is nice and thick, creamy and near perfect. This is great.

After a couple of disappointing beers, this one saved the night. Great aromas of toasted malt, coffee, and roasted malt. Nice balance with layers of the roasty/toast/coffee malt flavors on the palate. I would definitely recommend this beer to fans of stouts.

Very dark brown pour with tan, pillowy head. Aroma of powdered cocoa, brown, nutty malt. Very chocolatey flavor with mellow bitterness. Some oreo, some cocoa. A bit too medium bodied for an Impy. Stouts in a can are pretty cool, but Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy sets the bar incredibly high. Good, though.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is lots of coffee and roasted malts. This is a great smelling beer. Flavor is roasty coffee, roasted malt and a chocolate aftertaste. The alcohol is completely hidden. This one could sneak up on you. Damn tasty. The mouthfeel is medium thickness and very creamy, really the highlight of the beer. Medium carbonation.

I have yet to have a bad craft brew from Texas. I have to say, though, that the beer from Southern Star in Conroe has been a delightful surprise since my store started carrying it. I LOVE their Bombshell Blonde Ale -- and once again, Southern Star has hit a home run with their Buried Hatchet Stout. Rich, bitter, with notes of coffee and molasses, this is an emphatically robust beer, great with food. I also have to say I appreciate that Star is canning their beers at a time when here in Texas it’s hard to get glass recycled due to cost.

Wow, this is tasty! Can pour. Pours a deep, dark brown with thick tan head. Aroma of dark roasted grain, chocolate, coffee, malt..mmmmmmmmm. Flavor of chocolate, dark roasted grain, coffee, malt, nice dark roast bitterness, almost like semi-sweet chocolate. Mouth feel is heavy and some what creamy, medium carbonation. Overall, I love this stuff! My favorite from Southern Star yet!

Coffee roast aroma. Mid brown coloured smooth on the palate and strong in alcohol with a little bitterness in a crisp and dry malt finish.
