COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Potentate is a British style Old Ale made with Thomas Fawcett and & Sons Marris Otter malt as a base. British and Belgian Crystal malts round out the malt bill. The dominant hop profile is that of East Kent Golding. Both taste and aroma are of rich caramel, fruitcake and a slight nuttiness. Subtle spice and earthiness play a second role in the finish. The beer is very malty, but well balanced by the hops.

Bottle. Pours a murky brownish orange color with a very light beige head. Small bubbles. Aroma is malty, sugary, wood, and some dark fruits. Flavor is dry, woody, slightly musty, light fruit. Finishes dry. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Poured brown with a thin tan head. Some caramel in aroma, earth. Flavor is odd. Not much malt. Kinda muddy, dirty. Oxidized, it would seem. Tastes ... old ... not in a good way.

[On-tap] Pours red with a beige head. A strange and unexpected beer, and not necessarily in a good way. Fairly simple, with what can only be described as dusty nuttiness dominating. A little thin, but has a long finish. I’d like to rerate this to improve the quality of the rating, but otherwise I really did not enjoy the beer much.

Cool stuff. Thanks, Matt!! Aroma is light caramel and toffee, with some light cherry and candy notes. Flavor is similar but not as sweet as one would expect. Caramel throughout.

Big Texas Beer Fest. Hazy brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma and taste are honey, candy, and weirdness. I can’t put my finger in what it is about it.

12oz can via OmegaX. The pour was a murky brown with a soft head. Aromas reminded me of a Scotch ale with hints of twigs and toffee all about. The taste was smooth and malty; caramel, buttery malts, salt water taffy and dank hops come to mind. Fairly refreshing for a stronger brew - I’m glad I got to try it.

Can from Errl. A murky reddish-brown color pours out with a fluffy tan head. Toasted grains, chocolate, cookies, and caramel make the aroma. The flavor doesn’t uncover a whole lot else. There’s some silky oat that joins bittersweet chocolate, toasted nuts, grain, and a bit of earth. This doesn’t really taste like what I normally think of an Old Ale. Perhaps a slightly amped up Brown Ale. Generally not a style I like a lot but this is a pretty good beer.

(Draught) Pours a murky amber-brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of herbs, grass, toffee, dark fruit, and nuts. Flavor of nuts, herbs, raisins, grass, minerals, and caramel with a dry finish.

Oddly little aroma. Murky, thick, lava-lamp like look with carbonation churning. Malty-sweet, slightly milky with a burnt sugar finish. A bit of a bite on the end that borders on coffee bitterness that disrupts the smooth finish. Ok but not outstanding

Extra from Errl-thanks, Chris! 2nd Southern Star I’ve had and I’m starting to be impressed-both totally solid. Nose is some toffee and caramel and spicy hops. Dry, malt based with tobacco predominant, and earthy hop profile. Solid, English style old ale. Remind me of GD Hibernation.
