$6.00/16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a golden brown color. Well carbonated. The aroma is mostly malty with some stale hop flavors. It seems to lack good hop aroma, which is disappointing. The taste has some biscuity malt flavors with a good touch of bitterness. The one major thing missing from this beer is the hops to match up to the big malty body. It is sorely lacking aroma hops. With the great DIPA that was last years Pro Am I donít know what Southern Star is thinking.

1 pint, 9 oz bottle. Pours amber color with a short white head. Good lacing. Pine, citrus, resin and fruity aromas. Flavors are IPA all the way. A bit of alcohol burn on the finish, but then the hops take over. This is a big beer... great job!

Can:   Fireweed honey in color, hazy, little head, off-white, spotty lacing.   Bright pithy nose, a bit floral, otherwise somewhat of a juicy citrus aroma.   Sweet pith and candied citrus peel on the tongue.   Not big in body, mouthfeel is average.   Hoppy, but not biting, moreso sweet and pithy than anything.   Bigger than an IPA, but this is one of those 1Ĺ IPAs.   Tasty, but could be hoppier and certainly needs a bit more body.   Thanks Bill!

I received this beer in a trade. It might of been under more pressure than usual because of the jostling. However, I had let it sit in the fridge for at least three hours before opening. It spewed and poured suds out of the can the moment it opened. I tried to get most of it in the can. A huge bumpy head formed and stayed. Stayed. And stayed some more. There are some citrus notes on the nose, bust mostly a hammering of malt. Itís a dark, murky amber color. Sort of ugly. Finally I get a sip around the fat foam. Malt bomb. A lot of raw hop hotness on the back of the throat, but no real hop flavor to balance this malty mess. There is a bit of misplaced chocolate. Itís got a pleasing heavy mouthfeel. Only redeeming quality in my opinion.

Golden color out of the can with a sticky off white head. Nose of hop resin and malt powder. Big malty beer with tons of hop resin, candied orange peel and pine notes. Thick but not too heavy for an IIPA.

Quite tasty and if I understand its source, from a contest winner. I love to see breweries offering up and supporting the wares of the home brewing public. Nice hops aroma of floral and pine. Copper color with one-finger head. Average palate weight with balanced carbonation. Nice hops taste of citrus and peaches. Thatís what first came to mind. Have no clue what the alcohol was. Had a slight bitterness that didnít balance with the others if I have one critique, otherwise, good beer.

12oz can. Strong amber with a nice white head, residue that looks like actual hops in the bottom. Resin is quite strong, slight grapefruit. Moderate to high carbonation, moderate body, not as bitter as I thought it would be considering the strong resin, becomes slightly dry but the dried pine on the finish is off-putting.

12 ounce bottle
Thanks to Santa for a special release from the Texas Panhandle. This was a fine imperial IPA that was sharp, crisp, yet not over the top. It has probably faded by now but might still be worth a shot if it gets a second release.

Aroma / Appearance - The robust body pours a rich chestnut color. It almost looks like someone poured a bottle of bourbon instead except for the carbonation and billowing head. Grapefruit, lemon, bright floral hops, and grass clippings flirt with the senses. This does not hold back anything.

Flavor / Palate - Mango, lemon, bitter hops, and a low key malt bill stick to the back of the throat like window cling. The full body lingers for a while like the last people at a dying party. All told it is solid and a well made example of the style.

12 oz can from secret Santa 2012 - blutt59. Pours hazy amber color with off white head. Aromas of pine and caramel. Bitter pine hop flavor with.some sweet caramel. Medium body with average carbonation. Good stuff. Thanks Bob.

Very good double IPA from Souther Star. Aromas of wet hay, piney hops, must. Sweet smell as well. Mouth feel is smooth and just bubbly enough. Tastes of molasses, and fresh hops. Very bitter, but balanced. Finish is clean, with lingering bitter. Really good.
