Poured a brilliant orange/copper with a white head. Aroma was pine, citrus, orange. Flavor was pine and a long lingering weird bitterness. Body was medium with medium carbonation.

Excited for #100!..... This one pours an enticing copper/orange with just a hint of haze. Plentiful pine aroma, with hints of bubblegum, lemon zest and alcohol soaked fruit. The taste is pretty potent, with a wallop of heavy hops on the front end that pretty much stays around till the next drink. Not much in the way variation, this is all IPA.... The palate was more sticky and a bit more soapy than I prefer, but still drinkable. Washes down a bit slow, could have had a bit more carbonation. At 9.2% abv, you certainly feel it by the end of the bottle! Well, the first 100 ratings have been a pleasure....I have found that there is not a beer I dislike, just some I like more than others! I find it hard to believe it took me so long to discover all the choices of great beer out there....the craft brew market is incredible right now. Donít get me wrong, I still enjoy a good, cold Budweiser after mowing the lawn, but sometimes you just need something with more of a spectrum of flavors, hops and body. Prosit my friends! Beer, itís the best damn drink in the world. Jack Nicholson

This is really a bold, golden orange-colored beer with a fantastically frothy, beautiful head. The head eventually settles to a thin, slightly off-white film atop the beer. As it should, the beer looks serious. Its aroma is of fresh, spicy, herbal, piney hops. The nose is so acutely dosed with a delicious bouquet of hops (and a great combination, no doubt) that I found myself trying to inhale deeper and deeper with each breath. I did have an internal struggle smelling this beer, though, because I wanted to desperately to let my nose loose upon it like a pack of rabid dogs, but the aroma was so calming that I soon found myself slightly sedated by it. In the mouth itís much like what youíd expect of any well-hopped, thin-bodied, high-alcohol, moderately caramel malted double IPA. Itís, well, other than those descriptions, very thin on the palate indeed, with only the moderate presence of caramel malts offering any real malt flavor. This allows a very clean, straight up grainy character to define the beerís malt flavor, which is a really pleasant backing to the bitter, slightly resinous, herbal pine-like hop profile. Alcohol and high hop bitterness dominate the palate, but do so relatively smoothly. Overall, it offers everything one should love of a high-alcohol double IPA, yet it does so in a very soft, seemingly aged way. Imagine the body of a double IPA thatís been aged a year, but with the hop intensity of a fresh bottle.

500mL bottle. clear amber, sticky off-white head with moderate retention and some lacing. aroma is malt dominant: toffee and cane sugar with some mild resin and grapefruit pith. taste is the complete opposite: very bitter, low to medium sweet. poor balance. medium body, slick and oily feel, soft carb, long and bitter finish. this could really use more aroma hopping. heavy bitterness is fine and all, but when thereís no aroma to go with it itís just unpleasant. someone had to have messed something up in this batch. iíll try it again next time.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2013 Clear amber with a big, fluffy, rocky off-white head with thick lacing. Super hoppy, aroma full of citrus, with pine and caramel as well. Taste is on the bitter side, and pretty good. Medium bodied, dry, and pretty bitter at the finish.

Location: 500 ml bottle from Whole Foods - Kirby, 6/10/13

Aroma: The aroma is pine over citrus hops, with plenty of caramel and bready malts
Appearance: A clear orange color, with a reddish tint, and a small off-white head and streaky lace
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet, with plenty of malt flavors, and a rather large pine bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, with average carbonation, a sticky feel, and a long, dry finish
Overall Impression: I like this beer, it is a pretty solid DIPA. I wouldnít put it up there with the top examples of the style, but it has all of the right components to make it feel fairly close. At 9.2% this is dangerously drinkable as well.

$6.00/16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a golden brown color. Well carbonated. The aroma is mostly malty with some stale hop flavors. It seems to lack good hop aroma, which is disappointing. The taste has some biscuity malt flavors with a good touch of bitterness. The one major thing missing from this beer is the hops to match up to the big malty body. It is sorely lacking aroma hops. With the great DIPA that was last years Pro Am I donít know what Southern Star is thinking.

1 pint, 9 oz bottle. Pours amber color with a short white head. Good lacing. Pine, citrus, resin and fruity aromas. Flavors are IPA all the way. A bit of alcohol burn on the finish, but then the hops take over. This is a big beer... great job!
