Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Pours a dark brown black color with a great mocha head. Nose is chocolate malt and sweet. Taste is sugary sweet, but not overly so, malty and drinks quite easily. Finish is sweet as well, and semi dry. Quaff Score 8 / 10,

Tap. Clear dark brown close to black with a small lacing light brown head. Aroma is hard roasted malt, lacto, figs, dates, toasted malt, dark chocolate. Taste is medium sweet and bitter. Medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation. Finish is medium sweet, light dry and medium bitter with roasted malt and dark lacto chocolate.

Dark cola colored beer with a tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate are powerful. Tastes of dark coffee notes, and dark chocolate. Not much more to it than that, but I really like how the chocolate flavors come out over the coffee. Sweet, chocolaty finish. Full bodied beer with an oily mouth feel. Very sweet, a bit cloying. Tasty, a good example of the style.

In short: A viscous sweet stout with some weird flavors. Meh.
How: Bottle 12oz, consumed a month or two after purchase.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Nose is hot-chocolate, some phenols, tar, black liquorice. Taste is rather sweet which is not surprising coming from Southern Tier. Sweet black liquorice, burnt cereals, molasses, hot chocolate, ink, worchestire sauce, salty soy sauce. Body is very viscous, more so than a 7.5% stout should be. More than just lactic notes, I thought this beer was in-your-face milky. This beer didn’t work for me, not something I need to drink again. Not bad per say, but a little 12oz was enough, just an excuse to add another rating to ratebeer. And our beloved ratebeer website may not be the best thing on the internet but it is not so bad either, what really saddens me the most about the internet is all the weird sick stuff you can find out there and how I’ll never have time to see it all.

It poured a beautiful dark brown leaving a spectacular spider-web spotty foamy lacing gracing the sides of the pint glass. A semi half-inch white head appeared and lasted for about a half minute before dieing into the body. The smell had the chocolate up front, almost somewhat of a chocolate cake, there’s a slight bready/cakey smell in there. The taste had the chocolate and a bit of of a smokey coffee taste backing that up. The palate was about a medium to almost heavy with nothing harsh on the tongue. Overall, I like this one. I would come back to this, very good.

Pours a nice dark color, with a slight white head to it that dissipates quickly. Smells of nice dark malts, dark roast, chocolate, and grain. Taste very good on the palate, And lasts quite a while with the flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Toffee caramel nose with a hint of hop in the mix. Opaque black with good amount of carbonated head. Fairly light body for a stout. Middle of the road, half-hearted attempt. Not impressed.

Creamy. Burnt but little coffee or choc. Smooth, really smooth. Made me happy to see Dom appreciate some hops tonight. Shame I couldn’t get hold of a Rodenbach though.

12 ounce bottle- poured out a nice opaque reddish-brown with a moderate head. Aroma was a nice brown sugar and malt. Taste was brown sugar with a strong alcohol back. Palate was smooth and creamy, very nice. Just one question, Southern Tier Brewing is in...New York? This Georgia man finds that mildly disturbing...
