Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2014 Bottle->pokal. Black with small tan head. Aroma is choco/coffee and malts. Taste is initially inconsistent with aroma, but settles in. Very malty. Medium carbonation, somewhat thin mouthfeel. Good.

Getting some coffee and choclate hints in the nose....pours a nice ddep black. Hint of fruit and sweetness, most likely from the milk sugar and some malt. Smooth on the palate. Nice beer.

Not bad looking, a little brown leaks into the blackness, head was about two fingers and dissipated into a sheen, leaving ok lace. Nose: Gentle roasty malts, coffee, sweet milk chocolate. Taste: definitely tasting the sweet milk stout character, notes of coffee and chocolate, burnt and roasted malts, toasted bread, a little nuts. Body is slick, sweet, and pretty thick, pretty good for a milk stout. Once again Southern Tier has brewed a beer that I like. This may not be world class but it’s damn tasty and I’m glad I have a whole sixer of it. I will definitely buy it again.

Pours black with thin off-white head. Smells of alcohol, honestly. Tastes much better, roasted, almost burnt flavors dominate. Great finish but each sip is only "good" - so... Should I have another? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I enjoyed this. Although you need to coax a head, you do get a decent dark tan head with a little bit of retention. Nice rich coffee but keeps that light edge with the lactose sourness. Very drinkable with nice complexity. The ABV is strong but reasonable, and well hidden.

Black with shades of brown. Mouthfeel is full body cream, chocolate & sweet roasted malts. Low perception of alcohol. I expected better.

I don’t like milk; learning that I don’t like milk stouts and starting to dislike this brewer; maybe bad bottle?? no aroma; nice black pour. taste was wtf?? astringent toungue tingling up front; then nada and ends with an odd sweet chocolate and dry finish - odd duck!

An interesting brew, hoppy and alcohol forward in taste, but quickly is balanced and gives way to a roasted sweetness. This beer looks and smells like a stout, but has hops to go with the sweets. Not bad.

Bottle. Poured a deep dark brown with a minimal off-white head. Aroma was roasted malt, a hint of coffee and dark fruit. Flavor added in just a touch of bitter and chocolate. Creamy. A good brew.
