COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Bottle. Poured dark brown color with medium to large brown frothy head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Medium to heavy toasted chocolate milk and small hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet malt flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Thanks ughsmash. Pours a weak copper brown with one finger of dark tan head. Nose is meh, grainy with some black coffee and bakers chocolate. Flavor is really one dimensional and the bottom kind of falls out of it. Grain character has a lot of holes in it. Flavor needs building up. Body is blah, I’d expect more from something with lactose. Surprisingly dry finish.

Bottle. Black with a fizzy off white head. Sweet milk chocolate aroma and taste with evident lactose and a chocolate bread finish.

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head and decent lacing. A bit too sweet for me but not bad. Lots of flavors including licorice, chocolate and coffee. Somewhat thinner body than expected.

Yippee, snagged the last one of these off the BOTW shelf. Dark, couldn’t see highlights. Minimal head. Nose is mostly roasted notes, with anise. Palate is oily, smoky, charcoal. Palate is nice. Rich and complex. Hops blended in nicely.

Bottled. Poured clear, deeper reddish-brown with a short, smoked beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasted milk chocolates accented by fresh hay-like hoppage.. some lactic sourness was evident.. fresh and enjoyable. The flavor found more sweet and tart milky chocolates throughout.. dry earthy, cocoa, and rye-like bitterness around.. finished with more sweet chocolates. Medium-bodied with just the right amount of carbonation on the palate.. tart malty notes cut through the sweetness nicely.. not spectacular by any means, but it was a smooth, easy drinker.

12 oz bottle. Mahogany brown with tannish frosting. Nose is coffee, chocolate milk, oatmeal and faint citrus zest. Body like a thin porridge with zesty carb and a lightening buzz. Taste is sweet licorice, a touch of molasses, milk chocolate, coffee and dates. The malts initially appear to dominate but fade to bitter roasted notes with an ashy finish. Satisfying and surprisingly balanced for Southern Tier.

Bottle. Pours a deep chocolate hued brown with a medium sized beige head that falls steadily but not fully. Chocolate and roast on the nose, toasty and nutty. Medium bodied, super smooth initially. Nice chocolate sweetness, the lactose is nice here, moving steadily to a nice roast bitterness with toasty nutty chocolate notes. Long warm finish with more cocoa nibs and roast. Quite nice.

Pours a black body with a small tan head. Nuts, coffee, and a bit of chocolate. Dry-ish finish. Good stout.
