COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Nothing too special about this one. Good palate, smooth and creamy. I get the dark chocolate and roasted malts, just seemed a little weak.

Ouch, it contains lactose sugar, my stummic won’t like this one.... well, anyway, it pours quite dark, black in glass, tanned head. Smells of oats, roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Medium sweet, maybe even heavy sweet, something in between i guess. Some coffee and a milk flavor i suspect comes from the added lactose. Heavy bitter, some coffee and hops. Sadly i have to let half the bottle go in the sink. It’s not the beer; it’s me :)

draft - too dark here to see the color. nose is roasty and coffee. Flavor adds straw. Sweet and easy to drink.

12 oz. bottle poured into a chalice. A: Pours a very dark brown color with a faint burgundy hue when held up to the light. The head is a one finger mocha color that fades into a thickish collar around the glass in short order. S: Mild dark and milk chocolates, a hint of caramel, and some roasted malts. A nice smelling beer, only hindered by its weak aroma. T: Fruitier in the taste than in the smell. A light sensation of chocolate-covered cherries gives way to a finish of ash and lactic twang. Not much flavor or balance - can’t say I’m a fan of this one, really. M: The carbonation in this is pretty strong, to the point of almost detracting from the rest of the beer. Not much of an aftertaste, the finish trails off the palate too quickly. O: I’m coming to the realization I don’t like sweet stouts, most notably the lactose sugar presence they contain. Even taking that out of the equation, this simply isn’t that good by the standards of the style. Worth a try if you really (and I mean really) like the style, I suppose, but I won’t be revisiting this one - my first misfire from Southern Tier.

Bottle. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Flavor was medium sweet with milk chocolate, dark roasted malts, coffee and a bit of caramel with a slightly dry and bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, thin tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasty, coffee. Taste is medium sweet. Medium-full body, creamy texture but not too creamy, roasty finish with mild bitter hops. Nice balance to this one, not usually a fan of milk stouts but this one is quite good.

Pours almost pitch black with good aroma of roast coffee, malt, and hazelnut. Good lacing and head. Tastes like coffee, toffee, malt, some hops, cream and ends with a coffee/ hop finish. Overall a pretty good stout that I would buy again.

33 cl bottle @ home, bottled on 28.12.2011
Aroma is sweet with oat, some vanilla, sugar and milk chocolate. Flavour is somewhat sweet and slightly tart with milk chocolate, some oat and sugar. Too sweet for me – but that’s what sweet stouts usually are.
