Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Black pour with a fingers worth of a creamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, cocoa, milk chocolate and very faint hop bitterness. Sweet milk chocolate dominates the flavor with the lightest bit of bitterness in the end. Displays much more of a creamy and viscous body than milk stouts I’ve had. Enjoying this one.

Bottle from Canal. Pours out black with a small off white head. Aroma is of roast, lactose sweetness and some chocolate. Mouth is full bodied, with notes of roast, chocolate, lactose sweetness and a light lingering bitterness in the finish. Tasty brew.

(bottle) Pours black with reddish tinges around the edges and a very thin light tan head that leaves some decent lacing. Aroma is pretty subdued right off the bat, with just some light roasted malt and faint chocolate. Limited, but inoffensive. Gets liquid-smokey in scent as this warms up. Flavor is quite good, with some even roasted malt, chocolate pudding, faint coffee, and that fairly unique lactose sweetness. Finishes pleasantly roasty. Mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is restrained. Overall this is a solid milk stout that doesn’t drink like it’s been "imperialized."

35,5cl bottle from Ølbutikken, Copenhagen. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt with notes of milk. Sweet and creamy with quite pleasant chocolate and coffee flavour. The hops are hardly noticable, and it’s a bit too sweet for me, but still quite well balanced. Alcohol is hardly noticable. Finish is slightly dry with a hint of hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a nice large off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt notes with some lactose notes is pretty impressive. Taste is a nice balanced mix between some light dry roasted malt notes which are offset by loads of lactose with a subtle dry coffee finish. Body is quite full with a nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed with great drinkability factor.

355 mL bottle. Looks the part, although the beige head is a little thin. Cappucino stands out in the nose, but there is a real sharpness that stands out above everything. Underneath is some booze and a little chocolate milk. Flavour is smooth and creamy, with chocolate milk and a little roast. Not big or complex, but very drinkable. Nice stout.
