COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Bottle, bought @ Fish’n’Beer, Cph. Completely black with a light fizzy, yet creamy light-beige head. Fair duration. Aroma is sweet, light sugary, milky, chocolate. Raisins. Medium carbonation, light creamy and quite dry mouthfeel. Flavour starts sweet, lactic, mild roasted, dark chocolate. Hazelnuts and a lingering, mildly astringent, malty bitter finish. Well-balanced (that’s a new for ST)

Bottle from andersens. Black appearance. Sweet and burned smell initially. Sweet initial taste with coffee and milky taste to follow. Not too heavy for the 7.5%. Good mouthfeel and a decent milk stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle. black with a small creamy, tan head. the nose is moderately sweet roasted barley and coffee notes. strong, dark, chalky, almost burnt malt flavor bitterness mellowed with the sweet lactose. creamed coffee notes in the finish with a melting hunk of dark chocolate. medium body with a scoatch too much carbonation. i found it more enjoyable at room temp.

Plastic cup at craft beer festival. Very dark brown, tan head. Chocolate and coffee flavors, mild bitterness and clean crisp finish. Best brand at the fest and they ran out fast. Good example of a stout.

12oz bottle from Ceebs25, thanks Brian! Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is rich and sweet milky dark chocolates with some cookie maltiness. Decent roast backing to balance with some lactose sweetness and coffee. Flavor is similar. Lactose, roast, and milky dark chocolates up front before some cookie malts come in during the middle as well as a bit of an herbal hopping. Hops, roast, and lactose pick it up towards the end as this finishes dry with a moderate bitterness, but balanced with a nice, rich chocolate backing. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, medium body and a soft, medium-light carbonation. Overall, a solid milk stout. Lots of chocolate, but plenty of roasts, lactose, and a nice hop backing to balance. Easy drinking, flavorful, and enjoyable.

Bottle. Oily black pour with a thin and quickly diminishing head. I probably kept it too cold and as a result, the initial aromas are quite muted. I do smell some light roast and a significant amount of sweetness that I can only assume is coming from the lactose sugars. I’m hesitant about the addition of lactose - I suspect that the intent is to make the beer more palatable to craft beer newbies? I have noticed two distinct varieties of Southern Tier beers. They seemed to start their growth with fantastic beers targeted at the geeks (unearthy, oat, old man, tripel, etc) and they continue to make these more aggressive beers. They have also developed a line of flavored beers that seemed to be more targeted at the less-than-geeky crowd that can be turned off by more traditional flavor profiles. I can’t blame Southern Tier for trying to make money. After all it is likely these flavored mass-appeal beers that keep the geeky beers on the shelf.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep brown with a small creamy light tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate and some doughy notes, lightly fruity, nice soft malty character. Flavor starts sweet and cocoa with a nice crisp lactic note. Chocolate and vanilla are prominent through the lightly roasty finish. Medium body and a soft but crisp carbonation. Not a bad milk stout.

Thick black color with an off white almost tan head. Smells like dessert with espresso and bitter chocolate notes. Smooth round palate that cascades into a great finish. Smooth but not sweet chocolate with hints of coffee bean. Must go get a cookie.....
