Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Draft at the Little Pub at Hamilton College. Pours a dark cola brown pour with a fair sized and dense creamy head- good looking beer! The nose holds rich milk chocolate, touches of coffee, half and half, a hint of earth, and roasted malt, though the sweetness is certainly predominant over the bitterness. The flavor is more intensely sweet, with big creamy chocolate dominating the palate. Not complex, but well done, and very tasty.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2012 Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with a medium sized tan head that left good lacing. The aroma was toasty malts, vanilla, cream and a bit of cocoa. The flavor was sweet cocoa, marshmallow, vanilla, cream and toasty malts. The finish was long and sweet with lingering cocoa and vanilla. Fairly full bodied and smooth. Nice.

Bottle pours a very dark brown with a head. Tastes and smells caramel, roasty, chocolate, alcohol, light sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, sticky, soft carbonation, a lot of roast malt taste feels more like a porter to me not very sweet like I was looking for not bad but ive had better.

Aroma- sugar, milk, some malt characteristics, slight hops Appearance- dark brown, borderline black, crescent white head, some carbonation Taste- super milky, very sugary, some caramel Palate- relatively thin, decent carbonation Overall- Not worth the $4 I paid for it. Milky, overly sugary, not very flavorful, just mostly average.

Pours dark as night with a tiny head. Aroma is dark roasted malt. Not as thick in body as it looks, but not much carbonation either. Very tasty with lots of dark malt and a touch of sour. Bitterness is kept well in check as is the sweetness. I really liked this a lot.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, roasting, lactose, slight hops, and slight coffee. Poured very dark brown in color with a small, off-white head that greatly diminished and lasted around the edges only. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, roasting, light hops, and some lactose. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, roast, lactose finish. 7.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Bottled 12.19.11. Pours very dark crimson, almost opaque, with a small light brown head. Aromas of sweet milky caramel, roasty cocoa, and some sour coffee. The flavor is smoky malt, honey-glazed ham, and some bacon, with light alcohol and bitter cocoa in the finish. Low carbonation and nearly creamy, with a dry finish. Good; I get some "meaty" notes in here. [945]
