Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

pours black with almost no head.aroma is straight forward roasted coffee and chocolate.flavor is coffee and chocolate and is not as sweet as i thought is was going to be.maybe the bitterness tends to hide the sugars a bit.flavor reminds me of when you chew on a roasted coffee bean,it leaves that same bitterness on your tongue.low to medium carbonation with a medium body and a slick mouthfeel.very long bitter finish.cant say im dissapointed and cant say im impressed.its enjoyable but from southern tier i believe someone would expect more.the bitterness outweighs the sweetness and the flavors are not very complex.

Southern Tier has a very good line of stouts. I enjoyed this one from a bottle. Pours black with a thick tan head. One of the best creamy textures I’ve found lately in a bottled stout. Tastes great with a smooth kick of caramel and fruity notes. Would recommend this beer.

Subdued aroma of malt and coffee, pours a dark brown color without much of a head. Full bodied, dry feel with a taste of malt and a hint of coffee.

Bottle, deep black, almond colored head fades to a ring. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, dried plums, cookies. Taste is chocolate, rootbeer, vanilla, faint anise, coffee. Palate is smooth, but not heavy. This is a bit sweet, but gets dry at the finish. This is excellent, and I usually don’t like sweet stouts, but this has great balance!

From NOTES. A: a fairly demure nose of roast coffee, creamy milk and a touch of bittering cocoa. A: deep black color with a thin head with low retention. T: sweet and roasty with some plum and date notes; most of the chocolate and coffee are left back in the aroma. Sweetness is a bit strong at the end. P: crisp and a little smooth, medium-to-heavy body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky. O: A very nice double take on the style. Its a little bit to astringent from the roasted malt which cuts into to the sweetness. But a very nice beer that is the standard by which I measure all other DOUBLE milk stouts.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a beige head. Aroma is milk chocolate and roasty malt. Flavour is chocolate and roasty malt, some subtle dark fruit. Not as heavy as expected for the ABV, but still flavourful and pretty well balanced for a sweet stout. Tasty.

On Tap (and on Nitro) at the River Room, Whole Foods,Boise Lovely light tan Nitro head . Dark roasty aromas and flavors. Easy on the lactose sweetness but it does soften the edge. Very tasty.
