COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

pours black with almost no head.aroma is straight forward roasted coffee and chocolate.flavor is coffee and chocolate and is not as sweet as i thought is was going to be.maybe the bitterness tends to hide the sugars a bit.flavor reminds me of when you chew on a roasted coffee bean,it leaves that same bitterness on your tongue.low to medium carbonation with a medium body and a slick mouthfeel.very long bitter finish.cant say im dissapointed and cant say im impressed.its enjoyable but from southern tier i believe someone would expect more.the bitterness outweighs the sweetness and the flavors are not very complex.

Nitro... Pours midnight-black with a large, silken, mushroom-colored head. Never-ending retention. Aroma-wise, heaps of earthiness and deeply roasted malts stand front-and-center - possibly rawhide as well, but to a lesser degree. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and pillow-soft carbonation. The flavor includes bittersweet, malty roastiness with a tongue-numbing, singed caramel and burnt-sugar finish.

Drink cold (8-10° C) Eye: pours a deep dark, creamy color with a medium not too quickly dissipating beige head. Nose: Nuts and dark fruit, can’t figure out which ones exactely though. Mouth: creamy. dark chocolate and coffee malts. cranberries and and cassis. sweet licorice as well. Palate: predominantely nuts, iron. Bitter in the finish. Overall: good stout, nothing special though. creamy texture but other than that there’s nothing which would remind me of the beer’s name...

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA. Very dark brown pour with a short beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, licorice, and faint floral hops. Bitter charred malts are at the forefront of the flavor of this beer with noticeable sweet lactose, chocolate, and roasted espresso that help this beer from becoming overwhelmingly bitter. Lingering bitterness on the palate. Very good but don’t the 12 oz. bottle fool you; this is a BIG, heavy beer.

Chocolatey roasted malt with a slight lactose sweetness aroma. Flavor is similar, lactose is not very noticeable and the finish is quite bitter for a milk stout. Almost has a burnt malt flavor. Palate has a light feel for a double stout. Not nearly as balanced as some other milk stouts and has some odd burnt flavors and not enough lactose balance. Ok but nothing special. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Southern Tier 2X Stout has a medium, cream-colored head, a dark brown, almost black, appearance, and just a little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is a wonderful mix of milk/cream, dark-roasted malt, and sweet bread crust. Taste is the same, with low bitterness, but high acidity. Mouthfeel is heavy and slick, and Southern Tier 2X Stout finishes wet and sip-able. RJT

Brune-noire très foncée. Mousse marron claire, seul anneau persistant.

330ml bottle served in a big snifter glass. A: Pours a blackish brown color forming a small but quite creamy beige head. Medium retention and only small spotty lacings left in the glass S: Strong notes of roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate. Biscuity. Earthy yeast profile. Great notes of flowery hops in the end T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of roasted malts, coffee, milk and dark chocolate follows by a sharp hops bitterness in the end. Great balance of roasted malts bitterness and hops bitterness M: Heavy, creamy and milky body. Smooth. Good carbonation (a bit too much, indeed). Roasted malts and hops in the aftertaste O: Great drinkability. Delicious American Milk Stout [ BA Review @ 6/5/2014 ]
