3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter.
A - Smells of coffee and dark fruits, particularly raisins.
A - Pours ultra dark brown and looks fully opaque black as the glass fills up. The tan head recedes very quickly to only leave a little bubbly ring where the brew meets the glass wall.
T - Taste is consistent with the aroma. Initially sweet on the attack--tastes raisiny with a tinge of coffee and booze. The creamy milk stout qualities are revealed as a mere subtle gesture at the middle of the sip. The finish cuts right through these sweet/milky aspects and hits you with that roasty coffee flavor--a little woodiness and booziness is present as well.
P - On the attack of the sip I thought the brew was going to be over carbonated, but the bite mellows out pretty quickly and let's all the flavors take precedence. The initial bite may even work in favor of the beer, helping cut down the tongue's perception of the initial sweetness so that the sweetness doesn't take over. Really liked the mouthfeel of this brew.
O - This brew didn't rock my world, but it was an interesting--perhaps even memorable--drink. All at once, this brew showcases many flavors commonly found in 3 or 4 different stout varieties. It's reminiscent of Milk (first and foremost), Coffee, American Imperial, and even Irish (particularly the sour notes found in Guinness) Stouts. Really enjoyed this brew.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On nitro, poured into a shaker. The aroma is chocolate malt, bread, and lactose sugar. It pours dark and opaque, with a brown-black hue and a soft, dense, nitro foam, tan head with an ample, thick ring retained, and a thick, wisp surface coverage accompanied by a runny, dense, sheet lace. The taste is a medium sweet and medium bitter; perhaps slightly more bitter at finish and aftertaste. It’s smooth and fairly thin with a lightly prickly, creamy carbonation, and a medium body containing notes of chocolate milk, cookie, a touch of salted caramel, and a touch of raisin and nuts. A grainy bread crust and coffee flavor emerges at the finish and a toasty, dark chocolate, and coffee lingers with some ash. It becomes a bit sticky as it warms up.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottled on date of 12.26.13.
Poured into a goblet on 05.28.14.
A: 1 finger tan head. Midnight black with no red.
S: Toffee, chocolate, malt, roastiness.
T: Raisin and dark fruit dominate. Roastiness and woodiness are subtle.
O: This is a solid stout. The woodiness is stronger in this one than others. It is well balanced, but there are better stouts than this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle to shaker glass. Pours mahogany-black, quick small light brown head, no lacing or retention. Aroma of chocolate, bacon and roasted malt. Taste is very sweet, with bitterness of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee. Full bodied, carbonation is low and the mouth feel is sticky sweet. Finishes long and sweet with tasting notes of chocolate, cream, vanilla, burnt caramel, coffee, slight alcohol and raisin. Complex and interesting. Not bad!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bittersweet chocolate, a little like the Nestle Quik powdery deliciousness from my 1960s youth, comes through on this very tasty stout. Very boozy for a milk stout but you can’t tell from the taste. Enjoyable on a cold Wisconsin night.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle, shared by bastarda at oldmanriver’s potluck post-Nikolaus tasting 12/2014. Crème brûlée mitigated by lactose-sedated stout smoothness, with a suave hop back. Well-balanced, administering equal doses of coffee, caramel and oat smoothness. Not entirely sure what the extra alcohol adds to the style in this case though.
