COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

Bonus courtesy of markwise. 12oz bottle pours dark brown with tan head of foam. The aroma has some nice chocolate and then it heads toward earthy malts and an echo of dark roasted malts. The taste is similar with some sweet malts riding into a bit of chocolate and earthiness. In between those notes are slivers of dark roasted malts. Overall the sweetness takes the lead in the flavor profile ahead of the various dark roasted notes.

Poured up a black brew with a head that quickly died to absolutely nothing. Looks flat now. Smells of roasted and chocolate malts makes the lack of any head seem not so bad. Taste did not disappoint either and was the same as the aroma. Silky smooth to drink but only marginal carbonation feel. So it tastes great, needs improvement on body, but the price is not too far out there and the 7.5% make it worth drinking.

Appearance: the beer is a very black opaque color that has so many bubbles it almost fades to the head color, which is a very creamy light tan color, looks great Aroma: milk, chocolate, kind of faint Taste: lactose, strong chocolate and bitterness, alcohol Palate: awesome thick nitro creaminess, bitter aftertaste, soft carbonation Overall: this is off a nitro draft and the mouthfeel has the best texture, pretty bitter and not as sweet as I was expecting ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a thin dark brown from a bottle, sour milk, acidic, not bad but not great.

Pours opaque red tinged dark brown, tan head. Faint roasty aroma. Flavor a bit of a surprise - pleasant one. The dark roasted grain is dominant, but there is also roasted spice and a hints of vanilla licorice. Really nice palate, effervescent, slightly creamy, a gently bitter/ashy finish. Overall surprised by the restraint of sweet and creamy that I expected from a milk stout, instead finding much more balance.

Dark brown, beige head with good retention. Hoppy, sweet and lightly roasted aroma. Fully body, soft carbonation, quite sweet. Sticky on the tongue. Lingering average bitterness.

Bottle. Dark cola brown with a tan head. Big chocolate espresso aroma. Dark bitter coffee grinds taste with sweet cream. Some roasted malts. Very low carb, rich full body and texture. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fantastic milk stout, pitch black in the glass with a tight head. Sweet without being cloyingly so. Had the nitro on draft at the brewery and it was every bit as good at Left Hand’s version.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a snifter. A - Smells of coffee and dark fruits, particularly raisins. A - Pours ultra dark brown and looks fully opaque black as the glass fills up. The tan head recedes very quickly to only leave a little bubbly ring where the brew meets the glass wall. T - Taste is consistent with the aroma. Initially sweet on the attack--tastes raisiny with a tinge of coffee and booze. The creamy milk stout qualities are revealed as a mere subtle gesture at the middle of the sip. The finish cuts right through these sweet/milky aspects and hits you with that roasty coffee flavor--a little woodiness and booziness is present as well. P - On the attack of the sip I thought the brew was going to be over carbonated, but the bite mellows out pretty quickly and let's all the flavors take precedence. The initial bite may even work in favor of the beer, helping cut down the tongue's perception of the initial sweetness so that the sweetness doesn't take over. Really liked the mouthfeel of this brew. O - This brew didn't rock my world, but it was an interesting--perhaps even memorable--drink. All at once, this brew showcases many flavors commonly found in 3 or 4 different stout varieties. It's reminiscent of Milk (first and foremost), Coffee, American Imperial, and even Irish (particularly the sour notes found in Guinness) Stouts. Really enjoyed this brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
