Double Milk Stout
"2 varieties of hops & 3 types of malts"
Milk stout, also called ‘cream’ or ‘sweet’ stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, “Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker.” Surely! Of course, we couldn’t stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

12oz bottle. Pours black with a small, light brown head. Aroma is of malt, hops, coffee, chocolater, and wood. Taste is very chocolately with a little bit of wood and some burnt coffee. There is a light hop flavor as well, but it is hidden more behind the malt as it warms. Definitely has a sweet lactose taste that keeps it from being too malty. Easy to drink. A tad too sugary, but still a solid beer.

Dead of Winter maybe the best time for a strong stout. 2X Stout being a coffee dominated sweet stout with full black body, tan head and strong alcohol warming fits the bill. Licorice, chocolate and roast round out the Double Milk Stout.

Pours a dark black with tan head. Has a faint aroma of chocolate and malt. A strong taste of coffee, dark chocolate, hops, grains, vanilla, and toasted malts. A dry aftertaste from the malts and grains.

12oz bottle to tulip. Pours black with tan froth head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, toast, milk. Taste of same with coffee. Finish is bitter choc. Mouthfeel is mod-thick, decent carb. Really just tastes like heavy alcohol choc milk.

Bottle poured into a Lagunitas jar. Deep, dark aroma, opaque dark brown color with a small head. Not too heavy bodied and the by now standard (and to me quite annoying) combo of chocolate and coffee grounds flavors are pretty well muted, as is the lactose sweetness, also a plus with me. There’s a quite acceptable moderate bitterness on the finish and the alcohol is well disguised. There is a little bit of dank dogginess in the middle of the flavor (or was I just sitting next to a wet dog while drinking?). Anywho, pretty decent milk stout and I will have another, thank you...

12-ounce bottle pour. Pours a dark brown with a tan head that lingers and clings to the glass. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Tastes the same flavors with some caramel and faint licorice. The lactose clings to the tongue in this medium-bodied brew. This is so drinkable; deceptively smooth for 7.5 percent alcohol.

Nighthawk, Brooklyn tap: pours black with a bone nitro pour head. Aroma is chocolate, deli coffee, sugar. Body is soft because of the nitro. Taste is somewhat sweet, but not too much so. Pretty easy to drink. Low bitterness. Not bad.

Bottle at home while visiting jacksonville. Pours a dark brown with an off white head. Light to medium body, medium carbonation. Light chocolate, light coffee, some lemon. A little thin. Tasty enough.
