4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle. clear red under a small, cream colored head. inviting spiced nose with cinnamon, orange peel on top of dark fruits. light astringency at first, but quickly fades into malty sweet goodness. the spices are potent with noticeable bitter orange peel. nutmeg is also quite bossy. bitterness also fades as it warms. floral, perfumey hints in the finish. medium-full body. another classy ST beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle to snifter. Looks solid; amber with light beige lacing. Smells of sweet malt and spices. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Alright.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz bottle from a 6pack from Spirits Crossroads. Poured a good looking reddish/amber with an average faomy light beige head. Aroma has that "holiday" nose, notes of spices, chocolate, toast, orange peel, cardamom. Rather full bodied with stronger carbonation that is almost stingy. Flavor is similar to the aroma with a chocolate malt backbone, pronounced spices and a touch of range peel. Solid beer but I think this would be better classified as a "spice, herb, vegetable" beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 11/28/12
Aroma: The nose is mostly winter spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, etc), with some malty and fruity notes
Appearance: It pours a mostly clear dark reddish color with minimal head and absolutely no lace
Flavor: Tastes a lot like the nose, with a strong spice component, is lightly sweet and lightly bitter
Palate: The body is medium-plus, with an average-to-lively carbonation, and a dry, spicy finish
I found this one to be a solid, spice forward, offering. It wasn’t an absolute favorite of mine, but it had some nice components. From a categorization standpoint, I personally would probably call it a Spice/Herb/Veggie, but I guess you can’t go wrong sticking something in the catch-all American Strong category.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
12 oz. Clear copper with a lasting small spit of bubbles. Nose is nutmeg, sharp cardamom and clove, and maybe some spruce resin. Taste is a big overdose of cardamom, clove, licorice and other spices. Long after taste shows some nice hints of citrus, resin and molasses and is the only tolerable part of the beer. Unfortunately the front taste is such a spice bomb that it couldn’t even be blended into another beer to save them both. Worst winter seasonal ever.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Clear copper color with a short lived khaki colored head. Nose of some cinnamon, nutmeg and Vic’s Vaporub. Very spicey holiday ale with lots of cinnamon, spice, caramel and brown sugar. Some odd medicinal sense in the background. Dusty spice finish. It drinks easier than 8%. This is a big, spicey winter seasonal.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 6/20
Beer 31 Asheville trip, also nipped off the wife’s sampler at Thirsty Monk. Medium amber. Aroma of potpourri. Flavor matched, just an awful cacophony of cinammon, nutmeg, clove, faint ginger, freakin’ Santa’s elves’ deodorant in a box levels of spicing. Some may like this. Others, like myself, feel like this is being trapped in a Yankee Candle store and held captive. Yikes. After that rant, wish I could have tried it mulled, that could have worked better. Oh yeah, we didn’t even finish the sample pour between the two of us.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Total Wine Sterling. Pours brown with a thin khaki head. Doesn’t leave much lacing. Smells like Christmas cheer. It’s like mistletoe and bakers spices on the tongue. Finishes clean. Hides the alcohol well. This one’s pretty damn good.
