Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bomber bottle...Mahogany in color with a creamy light tan head...smells quite malty and sweet....some caramel aromas as well mixed with raisins and chocolate....silky thick lo carbonation texture...wonderful aromas are lost in the flavor profile...taste is grains, like a hearty cereal...sweet upfront with a bitter finish consisting of mile grapefruit...its good, but expected more going by the aroma...head lasts through consumption and lacing is present, but dainty...a stickinesses is left on the lips

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter has a ruby brown color and a thin layer of frothy light tan head that fell quickly. initial aroma had some hops that diminished leaving a thickly malted brew. caramel malt, alcohol, and faint fruit became the main aroma. mouth feel is medium full and fairly thick. flavor is richly malted, brown sugar sweetness, alcohol is noted (but this is 10%), bitters pickup as it warmed with light spice and dark fruit coming through.

Pretty decent stuff. Clear, brown, burnt caramel colored. Caramel with citrus and alcohol aroma. Flavor is fairly sweet with a decent kick of bitterness that lasts a goodly amount of time. Thick syrupy body.

Intense flavors. Sweetness. Malt. Alcohol While not on the level of Behemoth, a nice barley wine that gives that late night kick..

Bottle in trade from orbitalr0x. Thanks man!
Pours amber with a light beige head in a snifter. Smell is rich caramel, red ale like maltiness and light hops in the nose. Taste is sweet, smooth caramel and nicely balanced with hops. Medium bodied and very easy drinking for a barley wine with no hint of the 10% ABV. Good with nothing particularly standing out, but one that I’d definitely not turn down trying again.
