COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Clear burgundy pour, with a tiny ring of lace - aroma of dark fruits, carmelized brown sugar, chocolate, background herbal hops - a bit of an oily mouthfeel, but a tiny bit thin - burnt grains and a moderate hop flavor up front, followed by notes of black cherry, plums - herbal, tea-like flavors arrive late, coupling with grassy hops and a clean, raw can sugar sweetness - alcohol warmth crops up in the finish, along with lingering cookie/bready malts and carmelized sugar - one of the better high octane beers from this brewery.

On tap at Petrol Station. Pours a cloudy amber with small beige head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is a faint grain and oak. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet vanilla malt and oak with boozey finish. Good.

A - Pours a hazy garnet brown. Tight off white head leaves minimal lacing. S - Roasted caramel malt, doughy fruit bread, dark cherries, some tropical fruit. T - Loads of caramel and toffee, caramelized brown sugar. Sugary cherries and fig brighten up the dense toffee while mild leafy and citrus hops breakthrough and add some spiciness. Bits of bitter pecan and pepper on the finish. M - Full thick body, chewy and creamy at times. Not sure how old this is buts it’s on the sweeter side of things, in a good way. Very rich and lots of complexity. This is more of a really well put together English Barleywine than it’s American counterpart. Serving type: bottle 08-16-2011

22 oz bomber, Andersons. A-holes next door are burning wood and I have my windows open, but here goes. Ruby-garnet pour, strong light tan head dissipates into a medium ring; very sparse covering; small head is revived with swirling. Aroma is vinous, oak, red-brown malt, some caramel, and evident alcohol. Big flavor with a moderately heavy dose of booziness; oak is evident here, and the alcohol is not well-hidden, probably just peeking over into the wrong side of astringent. Lots of frothy carbonation; not quite fizzy and not quite silky but definitely smooth. I’ll take Insanity over this in a heartbeat but this is in the same vein and very, very tasty.

Bottle. bronze with a small head. Malts dominate with a sweet aftertaste.Medium body and amazingly easy to drink considering its strength. A top class beer.

Ubestrmmelig god lukt. Virkelig god smak. Lite carbonering. Et virkelig tungt men lettdrukket øl.

Et ubestemmelig øl. Veldig mildt på smak. Nesten som det smaker mel. Likevell et godt øl som bør prøves.

Draft at the Pig. Tulip. Sweet aroma of fruit and nectars. Taste of malts, alcohol and sweet fruit. I found the aftertaste rather tart and biting.

Poured on draft. Pours a darker brown with a beige ring of foam around the edge of the glass. Aroma is grainy, boozy, and malty. Taste is hefty malt and alcohol. Maybe with a year or two of age, this might get a little more pleasant, but as it stands, this beer really doesn’t do much for me.
