Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

This is one smooth customer which has a strong malt backbone that finishes well. Be careful as this tasty ale will sneak up on you.

Clear orange with a lasting frothy beige head. Aroma of cherry, wood, orange, toffee, sweet fruit. Taste is a great balance of hops and thick sweet malt. Bitter finish. Smooth.

650 mL bottle. Not-quite-transparent copper-red. Small head. Big, sticky caramel malt aroma, with toast, alcohol, gingerale, berries, and floral hops all mixed in there as well. Flavour is a bit of a letdown after the aroma. Not that it’s bad. It’s just a little too sweet and lacking the complexity of the aroma. Decent body and finish.

Syrupy orange honey pour w/ rimy bubbly head, bitter hop aroma w/o any malt presence, thin front end w/ some light fruit notes, followed by a big hop wallop on finish, heavy lingering bitterness on the palate

clear amber, smooth light brown/yellow head. caramelly and old hoppy aroma, also some sour or acid hops, sort of like a barley with some fresh ipa mixed in, and tons of caramel. strange. flavor is strong caramelly, malty, strong hoppy, sugary sweet, somewhere between barley wine and IPA. mouthfell is good. alc is hidden. very flavorfull.

12th September 2008. Clear dark orange beer. Smooth and malty with a cream undertone. A touch of fruit as well. Very smooth. Very drinkable.

Bouquet of cherries, pineapple, and dried leaves. Hazy amber, thin head, good lacing. It tastes of fig and horehound, quite bitter. Overly long lasting bitter finish. It didn’t flip my trigger, but I appreciate the one hop attempt, even if it was Hallertau.

22 oz. bottle from Ludlow Wines. Pours a reddish color with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, alcohol, floral hops, chocolate malt, mild spices, and mixed fruits. Flavor of caramel and chocolate malts, hops, spices, berry fruits, citrus, and warming alcohol. Sweet and malty up front, more bitter and alcoholic late. Medium bodied. Another solid ’Imperial’ offering from Southern Tier, albeit not as easy to drink as the others, as it packs some punch.
