Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-01-22) Deep amber. Clear. Dense white head that disappeared quite quickly. Hops, toffee and malts in aroma. Full bodied and little bit sticky palate with medium carbonation. Malts, hops. toffee, hint of boiled vegetables and some grassiness in flavour. Hoppy and bitter aftertaste.

Purchased a 22-oz bomber from Cellars Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-clear copper amber brew with a reddish amber head that quickly dissipates to an off-white ring. Aroma of caramel malt, some cherry and berries, roasted nuts, and some citrus hops. Taste is medium bodied, a little metallic from the higher alcohol presence with a chocolate and dark berries aftertaste.

a true exposition of hallertau hops: spicy and earthy. a great bedfellow is the delicious crunchy toffee malt. ultra balanced and devoid of a syrupy base despite its strength and potency. another hit from ST.

Coppery colored with sweetness dominating, berries, slight raisins and appricot here, interesting aroma with bitter hops too. Medium bodied, smooth palated. Flavor is fine too with danish vegetably notes, berries also with chocolate, aftertaste turns to nicely hopped with berries still.

Poured at 50. A subtle hoppy sweet aroma that pours with a thin lacing aroma. It’s flavor is a bit static as you get a barley start with a lacking finish. Almost as is something was stale or stagnent in the flavor.

Pours a nice bright copper with a fairly tall reddish tan head that has decent retention. Aroma is lots of caramel, sweet toast, wood, a little citrus, dried dates, and some light berry like fruit. Flavor is sweet, toasty, strawberry, toasy malt and nuts, light caramel malt. Citrus hops, herbal hops, straw and grassy hops round out the profile. Kind of strange for an ASA or Red/ Amber as far as body goes, thick and oily without much stickiness with an alcohol warmth. Finish is grainy and citrus with a sweet nutty fade. Only the second brew I have had from Southern Tier (both in their Imperial line) neither very good for their style. Not a good sign.
