Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Bottle, not really red but clear light copper with a nice white head. Nice, floral noble hop nose along with touches of grain and light toffee. The flavor starts with a blast of grassy herbal hop character with a nice undercurrent of bread/caramel and strong yet pleasant level of hop bitterness. Medium/full bodied yet quaffable with a smooth texture and medium carbonation. A different take on a hop bomb, I enjoyed it.

Sample provided by jasonp. Clear amber body with a small beige head. The nose is grapefruit, apricot, orange, caramel and a light cattiness. Moderately sweet taste with caramel, light tea, grapefruit, pine and cotton candy. Medium/full body is soft and chewy with light carbonation.

22 oz. bottle my mother-in-law brought back from NY - Pours an amber color with a very slight haze and a one finger thick off white head. Aroma is toasted malt, bread, and fruity esters. Flavor is sweet toasted malt and esters. Has a nice bit of bitterness too. Alcohol is fairly well hidden. Medium body. A good beer.

Nice reddish appearance with long lasting head. Earthy, caramel. Alcohol in the finish, but still failrly smooth and clean.

A slightly cloudy, golden brown pour with a creamy, white head.. This is a big one. Big mouth filling, malt flavor followed by a strong, flowery hop hit then fading to a bitter aftertaste. The hops are big but so is the malt. Sipping slowly the alcohol effect comes in slowly. A robust beer for when the day is done.

THOUGHTS: Saw this for a few weeks and didn’t pick it up because of the dull lable and not having liked their raspberry beer much, but after trying Pum King I neede to try as many Southern Tier beers as I could. This one seemed breat at first then bad, then back to good again. Would have been incredible without the rubber smell. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium to dark orange with an average-sized, white head that mostly diminished except for a ring around the edge of the glass and left good lacing. The aroma was moderate caramel malt and heavy citrus (orange) hops. But there was also a band-aid or burnt rubber smell. Overall it was nice but the rubber smells kept it from being great. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter, while the finish was moderate to heavy sweetness and heavy to harsh bitterness with an average to long duration. The medium body was somewhat syrupy with slightly tingly carbonation and a somewhat metallic finish.

Bottle. Tulip glass. Clear ruby color little head. The write up on the bottle advertises Hallertau hops but the aroma is dominated by malt. Sweet caramel malt aroma and taste with grapefruit hops. Spicy with a bitter finish. A good beer but I’m not particularly fond.
