milewide (609), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Aug 18, 2007 Much like Arrogant Bastard, but with less hop bitterness. $5.99/bomber vs. $3.99 for AB. Nice deep red color and medium head. Spicy smell and taste---with modest hop bitterness. HopBackDoc (393), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 14, 2007 Pours a cloudy deep red with foamy head. Strong hops in the nose along with a hint of caramel. Flavor was pine hops mellowed by caramel malt sweetness and a bit of toffee. Had a bitter and dry finish. Very nicely done. Nephilium (541), Ohio, USA Aug 12, 2007 Nice strong pine hop nose, with a bit of sweetness hiding behind it. It pours a dark amber with a slightly off white head that quickly fades away. Taking the first sip... wow... there’s a lot of flavors battling here. There’s the pine of the hops, a bit of caramel sweetness, a bit of tea like characters, and some spiciness that I can’t place. Fairly heavy mouthfeel, with a nice coating of the palate. Not bad, but there’s a lot better out there. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Aug 12, 2007 Pours from the bomber a slightly murky amber-red color. Supports a thick, dense beige head with impressive retention and sticky lacing. Well balanced, subtle aromas of toasted malts, caramel and toffee along with spicy and floral hop notes from the noble Hallertauers. Mouthfeel is quite full bodied being smooth and creamy with a restrained carbonation. As with the aroma the flavors are very well balanced between the malts and hops. Begins with a caramel candy/honey-like sweetness with a malty background. This is immediately followed by a moderately firm spicy and herbal hop flavor and bitterness. Interesting considering the low alpha acid content of Hallertauer hops. They must have used a ton of them early in the kettle. Finishes with a mild, pleasant alcohol warmness. An admirable attempt at a beer style that you don’t come across that often. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Aug 10, 2007 Bottle. Strong caramel aroma, slightly gritty with toffee and some delicious hop funk from the Hallertau. Complimentary florality. Copper-amber body, clear with strong ubiquitous carbonation and a creamy off-white head. Alcoholic, slightly sticky feel, full heavy body. Taste is strongly, surprisingly bitter, caramel and toffee, hop flower. Really, really dry. There are a lot of positive things to say here, and I’m happy about how this isolates the beauty of the Hallertau, but in the end, this is just another Imperial Mess. cathcacr (585), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 9, 2007 Not big on the flavor or hop wallop, just nice taste akin to an American Pale, and very soft and smooth on the palate. Poured with big raunchy head and medium to light copperishish color. Nice but at $6 a bottle I ain’t gettin’ it again, sorry. At half the price it’d be remarkable session material.
mephisto (1144), Taiwan Aug 8, 2007 draft at volo in toronto shared with radek. (thanks man) this brew has a mixed aroma of hops and malt, very chewy for a red ale. this imperial red ale represents everything american brew is about: (ok, maybe not everything...) a lot more of ingredients in everything to pump the style into something ’imperial’. Radek Kliber (3912), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Aug 6, 2007 Bottle @ Bar Volo 650 ml
