Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Nice backbone of caramel and toasted malts supports the leafy, green, floral and lightly spicy hop character in the nose. Lightly hazy deep amber-copper coloured body is topped by a generous tan-cream head that recedes slowly to a lasting large bubbled cover. Strong earthy, floral and spicy hops with plenty of caramel, raisin and plum malt flavours. Some notes of alcohol but not at all hot. Bitterness is strong but not overwhelming. Aftertaste is perhaps overly earthy. Medium body is quite dry in texture with prickly carbonation. Some light warming. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at the Brewery Creek in Jul-09.

Location: On tap at Fin’s Fish House in Rehoboth, 7/5/09

Aroma: A nice mix of smells here, some caramel is present, along with some earthy/floral hops, a little citrus, and some nice spice
Appearance: Nice looking reddish color, with a nice amount of foam from the tap that was about 1 in by the time it got to my seat at the bar
Flavor: Well balance beer that mixes the floral/earthy hops and the caramel malts to form a great balanced taste
Palate: Pretty nice mouthfeel, and not much burn for a 9% beer, well done
Overall Impression: I liked this one. A really good example of how to make a high ABV red that’s well balanced and a nice drink.

Pours a clear copper with a thin layer of foam and lots of lacing. Aroma is leafy and engaging, malty and boozy as well. Hops are so up-front in the taste that I didn’t realize they were the cause of the cat-piss dried jasmine flower flavour until I read the blurb on how they were using Hellertau, and then realized that might have been why, as I’ve never been a big fan of that varietal for that particular reason. But there certainly is enough of it to make this a very quaffable, refreshing beer. Moderate carbonation and a thin body. Quite drinkable, but that salty, urine-like dried jasmine sort of flavour is a bit off-putting.

bottle - Pours dark amber with an off-white head. It smells of caramel malt and citrus hops. The flavor is a good balance of toasted caramel malt with moderately strong hops with citrus and grass notes. It’s medium to full bodied with the 9% abv buried in there somewhere. Nice brew.

I triede this beer because of who makes it. Southern Tier brews a nice beer. This one wasn’t one of my favorites but it was still pretty good. I’ll try it again tohugh, maybe it will grow on me.

Greenville, SC - on tap at Barley’s Taproom. Dark copper pour with a nice white head that sticks around a while - good lacing. Sweet aroma of candied apples with a hint of vanilla. Flavor has some of the same vanilla notes with some mint, candied sugar and a hint of nuttiness in the back end. Sticky mouthfeel. A bit different, but enjoyable.

Bomber: Poured a deep amber, clear butt with a nice off white cap that lasted well enough considering the ABV% Aroma was very nice; pungent roasty malts with plenty of fruity esters and hop earthiness. Toasty-bready-toffee-fruity that’s the profile and it is well pronounced and executed. A substantial ale, firm bodied, satisfying and warming. I wish I had a supply of this last winter.
