Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Poured from 22oz bomber into large dimpled mug. Aroma - Caramel malt, slight hop aroma, and tea. Appearance - Copper-red in color with a decent off-white head that diminishes rather quickly. Thin lacing on inside of mug. Flavor - Big taste! I’m a fan of Irish red ales, but this one is like Smithwick’s on steroids. Lots of malt, hops, and...alcohol. Palate - Medium. A bit slick with a loooong finish. From the ingredient list on the bottle I thought it finish a bit cleaner. Overall - This is obviously very well made, but for my taste, the ABV is too high for the style. Traditional Irish reds are my ’go to’ session beers. This would make a nice occasional treat.

Big Red is a vermilion ale that’s very clear and quite sparkling. It wears a soft, thin, ecru blanket of head that has a couple of rainbow bubbles. Leaves excellent lacing. It has a homebrew whiff. The aroma is a little hop spice, sweet, sharp malt and... a bit of Play-do. In the mouth, it is velvety soft and smooth with a dry finish and a medium to full body... a bit of Plato. It is well-balanced. It’s constructed to feature the Hallertauer family with a round, semi-sweet base. Did I mention the dry finish? It’s simple and tasty!

Man, this stuff is tits, balance balance balance is the word here . . on the nose you get some fruit notes along with spice box, and that hoppy touch in the background. . . . The pallet is great ! ABV, well hidden in this stuff. It’s got a great hop finish, but not to overbearing, just enough to be addicting. . . Medium to Full. . If this stuff gets to warm watch out, the hops bite your mouth and the finish gets a bit sweet, but still maintains it’s balance. . . Great use of Hallertau here. . . decent Carb. Great pallet sick to it. . . Went Tail Gating to a Baseball game and slammed 6 22oz before going in the game, now thats Pre-Game Drinkin’ ! Another piece of art work in a bottle from Southern Tier, just keep off the Kiddie beer boys !

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm Clear deep amber, brief head. Rich grapefruity hop aroma. Sweet and fruity with plenty of caramlley malt. More rounded mouthfeel than in any other Souther Tier I’ve tried. Compact and flavourful, nicely warming. An excellent winter beer.

I’m impressed right out of the gate. Moderately sweet up front and falling off into big bitterness in the back. Light fruity hops all overn the mouth. Orange, apricot, peach, mango. Malt is quiet but just the right amount. Big hop flavor and bitterness comes together in something slightly sharp, but not quite pineapple or pine or anything like that. It’s a unique flavor. Now that I’m reminded this is a hallertau beer I’m starting to put together where that flavor comes from. I honestly liked it more before when I didn’t know what was in it. Either way a nicely balanced, complex beer.

Pours amber with a nice foamy tan head. Strong aroma of caramel and resiny/piny sweet hops, and a slight undertone of herbaceous hops. Flavor follows the aroma nicely with lots of roasted caramel malt and resiny hops, just a hint of brown sugar, and a slight note of alcohol that seems to hint at anise. Palate is medium/full, slightly spicy, with a bit of sweet caramel, an overtone of anise, and some warming alcohol. Not overly complex, but a damn fine balanced brew. Very enjoyable offering from ST.
