Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

22 oz. bottle from Ludlow Wines. Pours a reddish color with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, alcohol, floral hops, chocolate malt, mild spices, and mixed fruits. Flavor of caramel and chocolate malts, hops, spices, berry fruits, citrus, and warming alcohol. Sweet and malty up front, more bitter and alcoholic late. Medium bodied. Another solid ’Imperial’ offering from Southern Tier, albeit not as easy to drink as the others, as it packs some punch.

Bottle. Pours a amber body with a slightly "red" haze and slight white lacing. Aroma is sweet hop. The flavor is extremely smooth, slight hop flavor and maybe the chocolate malts very briefly making an appearance.

22oz bomber from 16th street liquor in West Van. I’ve had this before but didn’t rate it at the time. Nose is somewhat IPA like...hops, taffy like malt. Pours a clear copper with thick head. Taste is predominantly malt, somewhat caramel like, with hope present but very much in the background and then lingering in the finish. Alcohol is well integrated. This is another solid imperial offering from ST, just not my favorite of the bunch.

Pours a cloudy ruby red/ coppery orange with golden burnt orange hues when held to a light source and a 2.5 finger frothy yellowish beige head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Strong citrus hop aroma with some earthy floral notes and a very prominent caramel malt presence. Subtle pine. Very hop forward with a nice blast of floral and citrus hops that is quickly balanced out nicely by a caramel chocolate malt backbone. The hops are very prominent up front with a nice dry pine flavor along with hints of lemon peel and grapefruit. This is followed by a sweet caramel maltiness with hints of chocolate and some alcohol heat. The dry, bitter hops linger over top of the malt backbone and last into a dry bitter finish with slight alcohol heat.

Large bottle. Not what I was expecting. More of an average double IPA than a red, especially if going by color. Pours a light orange. A bit heavy on the alcohol but still drinkable. Not bad, but nothing special.

22 oz bomber pours dark orange, little cream colored head. Aroma is pine and caramel. Taste is very sweet toffee, vanilla and caramel up front with a solid bitter backbone. Almost west-coast barleywine-ish. Alcohol is definitely present, but still a very solid dangerously drinkable beer.
