3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: clear dark ambers and garnets under a fastly fading head of tannish foam. Sides crawl up glass. Swirls with lace, thicker along the sides.
Nose: initially mild. Sweet than hoppy with dryness lurking in the back. Golden brown toast with caramel along the edges, caramelized. Red apples with skins. Green grass. Orange skins, oily estery and bitter.
Palate: medium heavy mouthfeel with a pervasive crispness. Sweet up front then dry, hoppy, and bitter in the back with apple and citric skins. Caramelized sugars up front. Bitter grassiness underneath. Pine needles prickle the tip of my tongue. Honeyed crunchy toast.
Final Thoughts: surprisingly rather one-dimensional for a big Southern Tier beer. All-around ok but a bit more oomph on both the hop and malt front would have given it the extra flavor complexity an American strong ale should have.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle in 09, pours a hazy red orange color with medium sized off white head and lacing streaks. Nice retention on the lace. Notes of boozey caramel, light hops, spicy herbs, toffee, and biscuit. Medium bodied for an American Strong ale. Finished pretty smoothm with minimal heat from the 8.4%. Not bad.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Back from retirement in time for me to get a bomber from Liz. Pours hazy dark amber with a slight creamy beige head. Aroma is herbal with sweet malt. Spicy - but not in the Belgian yeast sense. Full bodied. Foamy carb. Flavor is sweet malt with a lot of herbal hop. Not grassy. Or maybe itís earthy. Definitely not grassy. Makes me think of a heavily hopped pilsner where the malt ran amuck. Finishes on the non-dry side, but the flavor combination is so tasty that I donít mind. Great beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Better than I thought it would be. Orange colour. Malty bready aroma. Taste is kind of hoppy. A combo between an IPA and a red ale. Quite good.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson! Hazy dark orange appearance with a fairly small, cream colored head. Rich caramel malty, somewhat boozy, toffee, very rich, spicy, herbal, a bit hoppy aroma. Rich, boozy, toffee flavor with a lot of spicy hops and some notes of flowers and soap. Probably a bit old but this is too strong. Like some other Southern Tier brews, this has not held up at all.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650 ml bottle at Volo. Pours a lightly cloudy reddish amber with moderate-sized slightly off-white head. Aroma is very malty with big toffee, bread and sweet, somewhat dark fruit. Taste is also very malty with strong caramel/toffee and sweet raisin/cherry with a bit of biscuitiness. Modestly bitter finish; gentle carbonation and silky mouthfeel. Nice one.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Smell is of malt and kind of citrusy. The color is nothing special just kind of hazy orange-yellow. The mouthfeel is probably what is most appealing about this beer, it is silky smooth. Malty taste at first but then has a slight bite to it afterword.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a light orange with nice creamy white head. Tonnes of honey and floral notes on the nose. More of the same along with a nicely balanced citrus hop flavour in the mouth. Nice high alcohol content is beautifully masked. Really good.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating(but this is definitely fairly aged, it is in a twist off bottle). Pours hazy reddish orange color, with a small 1 finger off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, biscuit, floral, toffee, pine, light chocolate, toast, and herbal spiciness. Some pretty good aromas here, with big caramel sweetness noticed. Taste of big caramel, chocolate, toffee, biscuit, grapefruit, toast, herbal, floral, and light pine. At 93 IBU, there is a surprisingly tame amount of herbal bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, citrus, biscuit, floral, herbal, and light pine on the finish for a bit. Big sweetness over the hoppiness, but it is not cloying at all. Nicely balanced and smooth flavors. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a nice creamy, slick, and slightly sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol is extremely well hidden at 9.5%, with only a small warming after the finish. Very smooth to sip on as well. Overall this was a damn nice imperial red, despite being pretty old. Great flavor balance, and very smooth for such a big beer.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2012 Bomber from Sicilianoís in Grand Rapids, MI. Says 9% ABV on the bottle. Pours slightly hazy orange (not red) with lacing. Terrific aroma of raisins, cherry, a little spice, and maybe even a little chocolate? Taste is good, if a little on the "plain" side; sweet, with fruit and slight spice. Alcohol doesnít come through in the taste or aroma, but the related big full body is very nice. Another good one from Southern Tier.
