“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden into a Bell’s tulip.

A - Pours midnight black with a thin white film of head, dissipating to a light ring around the outside of the glass, leaving little wisps of lacing down the glass.

S - As the name implies, huge amounts of bittersweet chocolate are ever present in this one. Even more lactic sweetness lurks in the shadows with the dark roasted malt. Very sweet smell, but in a good way. My only gripe is that it is a bit one dimensional.

T - Lots of rich chocolatey flavors up front giving way slowly to a mix of lactic sweetness and lots of dark roasted malt. Finish is quite sweet with plenty of lingering roast. A bit of heat comes thru in the finish as well. I like to drink this one with desert. It is very sweet but not to the point of being overpowering. Very nice sweet stout.

M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Finish is a bit hot with lots of lingering dark roast. Very sweet with a nice creamy feel.

D - Fairly high. Very sweet, but in a good way. The perfect desert beer. Over time the sweetness starts to get to you and brings this one down a few notches.

I know it’s too hot to drink this stuff in Florida, but my girl loves imperial stouts, and I can’t pass up a sip. Smells of candy bars, Hershey’s chocolate, milky sweet and caramel. Flavor has a little more bitterness and plenty of chocolate malts. It’s dessert in a glass, but isn’t it supposed to be?

Pours a dark black with thick light brown head. Has a strong cocoa powder aroma. This heavy beer has a strong taste of chocolate, with hints of coffee. A creamy and filling beer. A sweet stout.

650ml bottle. Bottled 09/05/12. Consumed 06/16/14. Pours black with a thin, beige head that fades to a ring. Aroma has huge notes of bitter and milk chocolate, slight roasted characteristics, some caramel, and a touch of coffee. Smells rich. Taste is a balanced sweet. Milk chocolate to start then into some bitter chocolate, faint roasted notes, and ending is a drawn out aftertaste. Very little alcohol taste but a faint warmth. Medium-full body with a low-medium carbonation. Smooth texture with a soft carbonation. Overall an awesome chocolate beer. Lots of chocolate but not too sweet. Really nice.

2009 bomber poured to snifters, displaying a ruby highlighted, darkest brown color, with a modest layer of deep, brownish tan head foam, and spotty lacing. The nose was totally rich & expressive, gourmet chocolate. The taste included smooth malt, a creamy mouth feel, soft carbonation, good fullness to the texture, but probably lost some of it’s roasted & bitter qualities to the cellar. Palatably sweet, with hidden alcohol, and still a very tasty dessert Stout.

5 oz pour on 5-17 Southern Tier public day. First time trying this myself. Huge aroma of chocolate and vanilla hits you. Very pleasant. Taste followed that, pretty sweet and was just like eating a hershey candy bar (mix between the milk and dark chocolate tastes). Full bodied, thick, and sweet up front with a bit of dark chocolate bitter and tartness. Outstanding beer. I don’t think I could do an entire bomber myself, but I’d gladly split one.

Huge whiff of chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. Creamy texture, sweet finish with some tiny hints of malts and spices. Full bodied. Fantastic desert. Shared this bomber with my wife, a full bomber of this sweetness might be a bit overpowering in one sitting. Thanks ruffian!
