COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Poured from a bottle at home. Pours a very dark with a tan head. Smell is of malt, chocolate and coffee. The taste matches the aroma. There’s some bitterness there that comes from the chocolate...almost like a dark chocolate candy bar. Overall a good beer. Would try again.

Typical imperial stout look, pitch black with a small milk chocolate colored head. Smells of sweet chocolate syrup with hints of vanilla, like dessert in a glass. Not much in the way of hops or alcohol. This beer is all about sweet malts. Taste is lots of caramel malts and sweet chocolate. Getting a strange vanilla bean flavor also. Drinks extremely well for 10 percent. Beer is medium heavy on the palate. Carbonation is a good amount, head unfortunately died down a bit. Overall this beer has been a solid go to stout over the years. Kinda on the sweet side but delicious none the less. Always glad to have some in the fridge whenever I can get it.

Noire. Beau collet brun. Nez: intensément chocolaté. Caramel. Vanille. Bouche: très très sucré. Tout de même bien balancé par une bonne amertume. Très chocolaté. Vanillé. Ronde. Fine chaleur d’alcool. On dirait une barre de chocolat au lait liquide. Pas très complexe mais combien savoureuse.

750ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: Pours a brown to black color forming a medium bubbled tan head with low retention and lots of spotty lacings left in the glass S: Strong smell of dark chocolate. Impressive. Vanilla, roasted malts, cofffe, earthy yeasts and some wood notes T: Slightly sweet upfront. Again, very strong notes of dark chocolate. Roasted malts, vanilla, coffee, wood, brown bread, wood, earthy yeasts. End in mainly made of a mild roasted bitterness. A bit milky too M: Creamy and heavy body. Low carbonation. Dark chocolate aftertaste O: Excellent drinkability. Very smooth beer. A masterpiece [ BA Review @ 5/24/2013 ]

22 oz bottle split two ways. Black body with a light brown head. Aroma is a complete chocolate bomb, smells like ST dissolved chocolate brownies in a stout. Taste is also a ton of chocolate, with light notes of roast, burnt sugars and molasses. I personally think the chocolate was a bit overdone in this- I would have liked this to be more roasty. But for what it is, it is really good...alcohol nearly completely hidden. chocolate lovers would definitely go crazy over this beer.

Pours an almost black brown with a tan head leaving moderate lacing. Strong chocolate aroma with a bit of roasted malt. Chocolate flavor is incredible, tastes like adult Yoo-Hoo, for chocolate lovers this beer is a must. Roasted malt takes a backseat but it’s present, but the chocolate is all there. Must have for chocolate people who like stouts. Or stout lovers who like chocolate, or beer lovers who like beer.

Transfer from BA review on 12-10-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a nearly pitch black color with a one finger of creamy-brown colored head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a foam surface on the top of the brew and a bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – With a name like Choklat would suggest, the aroma is super heavy of well… chocolate. The chocolate aroma is really quite delicious and sweet. It has a milk chocolate like smell mixed with some vanilla and a little bit of caramel. Along with the big sweet chocolate smell, there is some roasted malt and lighter coffee smells as well as just a bit of an alcohol booziness. Taste – The taste begins with a delicious and smooth milk chocolate flavor mixed with vanilla and brown sugar. Some caramel is there as well, with it fading as the taste advances. While the caramel fades more milky and creamy sweetness comes to the tongue keeping the beer very sweet and chocolaty overall. More toward the middle, some lighter coffee flavors start coming to the tongue as well as a roasted malt flavor joining the taste as well. The coffee grows in intensity and is joined by some earthy and woody like flavors. In the end, the lighter bitterness added from the earthy, woody, and coffee flavors mix and balance rather nicely with the sweeter milk chocolate tastes, leaving a very satisfying and rather creamy and smooth sweeter chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium in thickness and creaminess for a beer of 10 % abv. with a carbonation the in on the average side. While both are decent for the style and flavors I would have liked to see a creamier body and a lower carbonation as both would have really allowed all those delicious chocolate flavors to coat the mouth in all the intense flavors. Overall –The beer is like a sweet milk chocolate bar made into a beer and balanced out with a bit of bittering flavors. This one was super delicious and an amazing desert beer.

"brew courtesy thomassova4! i’d had and loved the mokah, so my hopes were high for this one, and it didnot disappoint. i served it right at 48, as suggested on the bottle, but man, both the flavor and aroma got way better as it got well into the 50’s. poured black and thick, with a tan head. aroma hoppier than unearthly ipa or imperial iniquity black ale (sampled last night as well) but with a good dose of roasted malt and a ton of chocolate, later presenting itself as super fancy tootsie rolls. the feel was silky and full. the flavor was bittersweet chocolate 1st, even colder, but it came out even more as it warmed, although you could tell it was well hopped as well. similar to but maybe slightly better than rogue’s hard to find imperial chocolate stout. very very good dessert beer. now i gotta find a jahva to complete the circle!"
