3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: JUN 28, 2008 [draught, original rating, 3.8] Tap at HDG - very cloudy straw-colored beer - cherry is subdued but noticeable in the aroma, along with a strong spicy character, wheat/grain, and an odd, but somehow strangely appropriate nuttiness - spicy and yeasty flavor, with a much lower sweetness than I expected (it’s actually damn near dry) - there is a mild cherry tartness that becomes more apparent as it warms, but overall it is quite mild - very faint hints of oak - I really like the direction Southern Tier is taking with this beer, but they still have a ways to go before they can make a great beer of this nature - a nice first step, though - keep ’em comin’, guys [bottle re-rate] - in the bottle this beer seems much sweeter, with fairly apparent alcohol - this difference is enough to make the beer much less enjoyable - the 3.4 rating is still slightly elevated because I enjoyed the tap sample I had so much.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a lightly hazy golden with a medium bubbly creamy white head. Aroma of bready pilsner malt, light Saison spicy notes, floral, grassy hops, citrus, cherry is there but light, also getting some light oak. Flavor of bready malt, lightly tart cherries, banana, Saison spicy notes, woody, dryness that lingers. Some hop flavor.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Lightly hazed golden color. Tall, vanilla tinted milk colored head. Wheat dominates the aroma. Sniff deeper and some mild sweetness, with pale malt, currants and apricots. Hints of vanilla and oak at times. Cherry and wheat flavors are cut short by alcohol spice early in the middle. I served this one a bit on the warm side and the alcohol is everywhere. Lightly burning on the palate, flavors throughout middle, finish and linger. I do catch some dark cherries every once and awhile. I really must try this one at a cooler temperature.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Cole’s in Buffalo. Pours hazy yellow with a thin white head. Aroma is tart cherry and a bit of fruit and spice. Medium body. Flavor has a lighter cherry quality compared to the aroma, as well as some grassy, herbal, and spicy notes. Not bad, but I expected a bit more.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Greenwood Gourmet Grocery in Greenwood, VA near Crozet. A trip by this place on your way to Blue Mountain is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Pours a hazy light gold color. Big head quickly fades but leaves nice circular lacing. Aroma is tropical fruits, cherry, grass. Bitter taste, both from the hops and from a slightly medicinal quality from the cherries. Unpleasant, but not by enough to ruin the beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits and shared by BDR and Badgerben. From 22-oz bomber pours a semi-hazy golden pale brew with a thin off-white head that dissipates to a fine film and ring. Aroma of light cherries, light golden grain malt, a touch of apricot and some grassy hops. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of golden grain malt with wheat, cherries, and some grassy hops. Finish is semi-sweet with a mild yeast aftertaste the quickly disappears. Could use a little more funkiness but still enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cloudy gold color with a medium head. Light cherries, grass, hay and hops. Quite a grainy base. Very thick feel. The grass and herbal come through after a few sips. Cherry fades into nothingness.
