Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

22oz bottle. Like liquid chocolate. Perhaps the most chocolaty of all the chocolate stouts I have tried. Very well done. I’m not sure which one I like better, this or the slightly less sweet, more bitter Southern Tier Jah-va. Update 5/1/08: Knocking it down a couple points after another tasting due to the extreme sweetness. May be too much chocolate flavor for it’s own good.

I cellared a bottle of Choklat since Christmas, opened while homebrewing. Dark chocolate leaps out the entire time drinking this Imperial Stout. Smooth, silky seamless blend hop & chocolate bitterness. I took my time consuming the bomber of Choklat, and it was delicious.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Pours a nice dark black with good head. A bit thick, but the amazing chocolate taste with hints of vanilla reminds me of a tootsie roll. Alcohol is hidden well. Definitely an incredible stout.

[Bottle] Pours deep brown with a scant tan head. Aroma initially is nice - smells like a hershey kiss, however, as it develops, a stomach curdling fake chocolate covered berry aroma comes out with some phenols that just smell like a liquid hangover. Flavor is pretty much the same, some powdery cocoa flavors, some berry flavors, tons of just disgusting residual sugars that make me hesitate to have any more so I don’t get a fuckin hangover. Just a horribly done beer. I don’t understand how people can enjoy this. I understand that it’s intended to be a sipping beer, but I don’t understand who would ever want to sip this beer. Medium mouthfeel.

Cold 22oz bottle: Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a thin, tan head. Aroma is of chocolate cherry cordial candy with some alcohol notes. Taste is of rich, dark malts, dark chocolate and dark fruits, well blended with subtle, grassy hops. Ending is of bittersweet dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied and smooth, with ample carbonation. VERY NICE!!

Bomber: Pours black with ruby highlights with a thin tan head, huge aroma of chocolate with some dark fruits, starts slightly bitter and ends very sweet with a chocolate aftertaste. Full bodied with a sticky mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden.

Yes, this was very good. I shared a bottle of this with neighbors sitting around my backyard firepit on the first warm day in April. Lovely smoke...from the fire. Rich chocolate flavor of very good dry, bitter chocolate, with low abv and good palate. I didn’t want too much of this, however. Great flavor, but too rich for a whole bomber by myself, for sure.
