UPDATED: JUL 26, 2012 Extremely dark brown body with a small light brown or tan head. Instant decadence in the nose, with a straight shot of rich chocolate and a light dusting of sugar… probably one of the purest chocolate aromas I’ve ever experienced, with notes of fudge and chewy nougat. Reminded me of snacking on good chocolate eats in Belgium. It’s a sweet stout for sure, but nowhere near overly sweet or overdone. The subtle bitterness of the chocolate, the richness and depth of the chocolate, could make this one of the best dessert beers I’ve ever had. Truly an amazing drink, the best dessert beer I’ve ever had, a perfect hybrid of a chocolate stout and a chocolate liqueur.

Not just chocolate, but deep dark chocolate. The aroma assaults the nose from the first sniff and deepens as it warms. Hefty ABV, this is a great example of a chocolate stout. Right up there with Brooklyn’s.

Draft. What a treat! On first inspection, it was difficult not to give the beer perfect ratings across the board. Aroma of rich chocolate milk. This is thick and delicious - a good desert beer.

Bomber split with Naka. Pours oily back w/ thin head rimming the goblet, brown. Nos is cocoa and wet roasted barley. Taste is roasted barley and chocolate w/ alcohol and hop bitterness which blends well w/ the bitter chocolate. Some dar fruit notes, plum and raisin, some tannin-esque notes. This is a tasty brew. Could be one of my new favorites

Pours like dirty oil with no head for all intents and purposes. Nose of chocolate, dark roasted coffee, molasses, and alcohol. Tastes of very rich dark chocolate, caramel malt, alcohol, and finishes with a roasted nuttiness that is almost like peanut butter. There is a strange, yet delicious fruitiness to it that is almost like pears or plums. It has a thick oily body with a bit of a carbonic bite to it and a dry finish.

I know everybody loved this. I thought it was a very decent stout and I can see the bittersweet quality chocolate as being attractive. Some chocolate came through the stout aroma. It was black with a bit of creaminess. Mouthfeel was medium. I found this stout to be astringent and even burning my stomach. Maybe another day, but I will be reluctant.

Aroma: like pure chocolate syrup, dark chocolate with the richness of cream, some wheatiness and roasted malts
Appearance: deep brown-->black, no head, lacing
Flavor: very dark chocolately, creamy, deep dark chocolate with some malty/wheaty/hoppiness
Palate: slight bitterness in the aftertaste, nice dark chocolate taste, good sweet mouthfeel
Overall: excellent dessert beer; it takes the cake! Much better than many other "chocolate" stouts with like fake chocolate-y tastes and aftertastes

Black as night, with a thin, ecru-hued line of bubbles on the sides of the snifter. Incredibly rich and cocoa-filled aroma. Lots of roasted malts and vanilla especially. Lactose sweetness in the nose matches the delicate lactose/cream notes in the flavor. Just the right amount of coffee in the flavor. Not artificially chocolate tasting at all - this is not a Hersheys, and even better than godiva...A girl’s dream, this beer. One of the smoothest beers I’ve had, and the 11% is perfectly hidden. This beer rivals some of Bells’ best brews.

I’ve been waiting for Southern Tier to make an impy stout that really wowed me - they’ve finally done it with this one - pours nearly black, with a lasting ring of soapy foam - the aroma is almost all bittersweet chocolate (it smells like the inside of a boutique chocolatier), with faint notes of espresso beans and dark berries (southern tier has been nailing aromas lately, ie. pumking) - strong coffee bitterness braces the palate against the strongly sweet chocolate flavors that are to come, making the beer seem much less sweet than it probably is (one problem their impys have had so far is their cloying sweetness - this one balances that out) - a cream sweetness and notes of caramelized sugars mix with the heavy dark chocolate flavors to give the beer a kind of hot chocolate (not hot cocoa, hot chocolate) flavor - a kind of charred character with hints of tobacco way in the back mix in to remind me of the complex notes many fine dark chocolates have - warming alcohol and a subtle spiciness on the back end - as has been stated, it’s more a chocolate beer than a chocolate-flavored impy - but if you love chocolate, you’ll love this no matter what - a wonderful beer.

Interesting to have this the day after the "Oat" IS. Much drier tasting than that one. Color-wise also very black, with brown highlights. Just about no head, it certainly disappears quick. Very sweet chocolate aroma. Some of the bitterness in the palate is obliterated by the chocolate as well. A bit light and one-dimensional as an imperial stout, but enjoyable.
