COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

22oz bottle, no date as a bonus from black95tt, thanks a ton Ryan! Pours deep mahogany--black in the glass--with a one finger creamy beige head, fades to a very thick ring before long. Lots of milk chocolate and Nestle Quik in the aroma, as well as a chocolate malt--the frozen treat, not the grain. There is also some light roasted malts and raw alcohol in the background. Aroma is more candy than beer. Flavor has darker chocolate than the aroma led on, though there’s all walks of chocolate here. Somewhere some vanilla peaked through and continued in the background through to the finish. At room temperature some light roasty malts and tangy soy showed up. The finish is Tootsie-Roll with a little bit of spicy alcohol. I don’t remember which, but one of heemer77’s liquor filled chocolates was a lot like this. Full body with light creamy carbonation. You really do need to love chocolate to like this, and even then, I can’t guarantee you will.

Very over the top chocolate everything. More is not necessarily better, and in this case it was much worse for me. This beer is a one trick pony and doesn’t do much more than shock you with how chocolatey it is. I was hoping for someting a little more subtle and balanced.

Bottle courtesy of shadey. Wow, what an interesting take on the style. One of the most unique imperial stouts I’ve sampled. Pure chocolate w/ hints of hop and alcohol. VERY good.

22oz bottle from Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Pours incredibly deep brown, capped with a moderate sized, creamy tan head. Impressive milk chocolate aroma; perhaps some tootsie roll in the there as well. Flavor is all chocolate; sweet milk chocolate and cocoa at first, giving way to bittersweet chocolate and some roasty notes towards the finish. Silky smooth and almost too easy to drink for its 11%. Really nice stuff.

Thanks to jjpm74 for the bottle. Hmm, another disappointment from Southern Tier... From a brewery I have always been excited about trying beers from, I haven’t had a single one I would ever get again, from them and this was no different...
Pours a rich black, with only slight shades of ruby coming through, and next to no head which didn’t last even from a vigorous pour. Smell is very light alcohol and cheap chocolate and an artificial chemical component. Reminds me of the Shenandoah Chocolate Donut Beer in a bad way... Taste is somewhat rich, fake chocolate again and little else. Moderately balanced bittersweetness with a nice mouthfeel and light carbonation, but when its coming from something that smells like cheap melted hersheys, wax and preservatives, who cares? If you’re going to add this much of some outside ingredient aside from the actual brewing process, you ought to make it fresh, or high quality, and I don’t get the impression they did that at all here. Drinkable, but I would never recommend this as more than a mere novelty.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2010 Pours out dark brown/black with a moderate to small tan head. Aroma is of dark chocolate, chocolate syrup and some slight alcohol. Taste is very complex, dark to bittersweet chocolate, hostess cupcakes and one of those chocolates hotels leave on you pillow are some of the chocolate tastes I pick up. Beer finishes somewhat bitter and dry with slight alcohol on the finish, but not as strong as an 11% beer usually is.

From a 22 oz bottle. Pours dark black with small bubbly tan head. Aroma of pure milk chocolate. Not much else just chocolate. Taste is just like chocolate milk. Silky smooth and delicious. The 11% abv is no where to be found and this brew can creep up on you. A fantastic chocolate stout. If you are looking for more than just a great chocolate taste in a stout then head elsewhere, this is chocolate lovers dream of a beer.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2008 A big thanks to Dr. Bill, or to whomever brought it to his gathering. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, lots of bittersweet chocolate flavor. A different and truly excellent beer.
