nickd717 (1273), Palo Alto, California, USA Mar 12, 2009 Bottle. Good, but not to the point where you’d smack your granny. Black in color with minimal head. Aroma is tootsie roll all the way. Flavor is more tootsie roll with a little roasted malt. Fairly simple, but good. The chocolate could be a little better quality, but overall I’m not complaining. Smooth and creamy on the palate. andersand (271), Malmö, Sweden Mar 10, 2009 Rather fun but extremely simple tasting beer. Aroma is inviting chocolate, the taste is all chocolate, the aftertaste is chocolate with light roast and warming alcohol. The medium body makes it fairly drinkable still but overall it’s sweet and simple. Still, a good beer for a certain occasion, not sure what kind of occasion but one.. Maybe splitting a bomber on ten people as a dessert beer maybe.. SamGamgee (1394), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Mar 9, 2009 Updated: Mar 10, 200922oz bottle. Dark brown, bordering on black in the glass, with a small, dissipating head. The aroma is super-sweet caramel and chocolate syrup in a dead-on Hershey’s impression; add on some marzipan and hazelnut. That in itself is interesting to say the least. The flavor is shockingly sweet chocolate syrup, light roasted malt husk, and smooth alcohol. The body is full and sticky, with low carbonation. In all honesty, this was interesting in how well it impersonated Hersheys syrup, but it did not make for a good beer; no complexity or anything nearing balance, just all sweet sugary alcoholic syrup. Definitely couldn’t finish a bomber of this.
Rerate: Interesting experiment: I had half a bomber of this left last night, even after having two of my roommates take a shot at it as well, so I froze it overnight. This evening I partially thawed it and poured off the flat, concentrated remains. Holy chocolate liqueur! You could make a mean choco-tini with this stuff. I would have, but I seem to have misplaced my chocolate vodka as well as already pouring this down the drain. Maybe I could have made chocolate pudding with this? bhensonb (4180), Woodland, California, USA Mar 8, 2009 Bottle from Wine Specialist. Very dark brown/black color with a decent tan head. The aroma is simply chocolate. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavor is darkish milk chocolate with quickly following toasted malt. But the chocolate is ever present. The barely noticeable heat suggests a cordial filled chocolate. The finish is pretty chocolate. Brewbie (217), New York, USA Mar 5, 2009 dark black, with a nice tan head. big chocolate aroma, smells like Hersey’s dark chocolate. tastes like a chocolate covered cherry. the chocolate is huge in this, and for 11%, the alcohol taste is slight until it warms. Probably not something I’d have out at a bar but a great after dinner beer. j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Mar 4, 2009 On tap at the Golden Rail. Pours a jet black with a thick tan head. Smells like a melting chocolate bar, with a hint of perhaps a deep cherry note. Body is medium, but remarkably creamy. Slight cutting note in it… almost acidic, but not quite. Sort reminiscent (again) of a the slight alkali that balances out a good dark chocolate. Finishes with a nice bitter cocoa flavor. I have a feeling this is one of those few beers that if I come across it in a blind tasting I’ll be able to pick out… it’s just remarkably unique. Possibly a little heavy/novel with the chocolate, but that’s what makes it so good and interesting. The fact that somehow 11% is hidden in here is remarkable, as this is quite easy drinking… or sipping as the case may be, as this is something to be slow with and appreciate. Also had this side by side with the Rogue Chocolate Stout, and this just blows it away. DeputyAndy (60), New Jersey, USA Mar 3, 2009 Pours like a typical stout, with no head. Smells exactly (i’m not kidding) like chocolate syrup. very sweet taste, possibly the best dessert beer. Again, tastes like thin chocolate milk without the slightest indication of alcohol. I literally had to check the bottle for the alcohol content and was floored when i found out it was 11%. Great beer. ditmier (1015), Boise, Idaho, USA Mar 2, 2009 2008 Bottle - Thanks CaptainCougar! - Pours a thin black with a bubbly tan head...aroma is chocolate taffy, vanilla...flavour explodes in the mouth, chocolate, malt, creme, vanilla, coffee...just amazing in how the taste resembles the nose...the alcohol is terrific, and the only thing that gives me pause is an underlying acrid charred wood bitterness that lasts throughout...who cares, this is just amazing...
