Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Feb 20, 2009 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, fully diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, cocoa, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, roasted grain), trace hops (flowers), with a STRONG note of vanilla. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. This is almost more vanilla-ish than chocolatey...must have been a really vanilla-heavy chocolate they used. Literally almost like sniffing a bottle of vanilla extract. It’s nice in some ways, but kind of one-dimensional...chocolate and vanilla completely dominate the aroma. The other elements struggle to come to the surface. Syrupy sweet, but not cloying. Not as good as hoped, but not as bad as feared. mspindler (301), Alta Loma, California, USA Feb 20, 2009 22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a mocha head that dissipates fast but has decent lacing. Smells like a chunk of dark chocolate. Maybe a little coffee, but really, really chocolatey, almost like hot chocolate. Flavor is again a chocolate bomb. Not very complex, but well balanced for the abundance of chocolate. Normally I would take points away for a lack of complexity that most great stouts have, but screw it. This stuff was awesome. If you like beer and chocolate, this is the answer. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Feb 19, 2009 Dominant chocolate. Like taking a Hershey’s bar and melting it. Can’t really be described any way other. Dessert beer for sure. It’s good, yet one dimensional, and at times the chocolate comes across as a bit artificial. That and the one dimensional aspect would be the negatives for this beer. On the positive side, you barely can taste the alcohol. Definitely something I could not drink a high volume of. Pretty decent. Pwn3d (1036), Manhattan, New York, USA Feb 19, 2009 Updated: Feb 28, 200922 oz bomber and also on tap at Rattle n Hum in NYC. This is one of my favorite beers of all time. Delicious stout, rich lively chocolate flavor. No alcohol noticeable until the glass is near empty and slightly warmer, and for 11 percent - GODLIKE. Absolutely incredible, you owe it to yourself to try to get a hold of this. tturner (103), , Washington, USA Feb 19, 2009 Big yummy chocolate. dark. very smooth sweet on the front. great carbonation. only real issue for me is the finish- a little acidic and bitter. slightly out of balance. Otherwise this would be a 5.
Narnad (681), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Feb 18, 2009 A rich dark black color with a pretty small head and low carbonation. Aroma is very sweet and sooo strong of chocolate that it smells like Hershey syrup. Chocolate punches you right in the mouth and doesn’t let go. Flavor moves from sweet at first to a more bitter chocolate flavor middle and ends with a dry, malt ending. The beer is definitely heavy enough to carry the flavors very well. This is a great chocolate stout but my only problem with the beer is so strong of chocolate it makes you feel like you may have diabetes after finishing 22oz of it. kevd193213 (477), Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA Feb 18, 2009 22 oz bomber. Dark brown, almost black pour with a thin brown head. Aroma of chocolate and sugar. Sweet yet smooth taste with a sweet finish. Despite the 11% ABV there is only a hint of alcohol and the finish is smooth rather than the typical bitter sharp for other imperials. IPAaLLtHEwAY (136), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Feb 17, 2009 Holy choklat! The aroma here leaves me flustered and hiding my boner. Smells like something that people spend a life time in search of. Rich and smooth chocolate, Its very aromatic seducing the senses. Pours black... Pitch black. I want to hold it up to the sunlight, but its a cloudy Wisconsin day and theres no sun. The flavor is bitter sweet, excellent chocolate taste and thick creamy mouthfeel. The flavor lingeres discreetly with a dark chocolate taste. This is the best chocolate imperial stout ive ever had. Its bold and confrontational, but still keeping smooth dark chocolate in reserve.
