Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

22oz. Deep pour that is a bit more translucent than other imp stouts. Nose is fresh, light chocolate and cocoa. Body is quite smooth, vanilla, hot chocolate, espresso. There is a ton of chocolate all over this beer, more than any thing else i’ve found. It still runs against that water-chocolate flavor that i find rather unappealing, but this is better than any other of this ’style’. Interesting, worth a try and respectable.

22oz Bomber. Pours dark black. Thin tan fizzy head. Aroma intense. It’s chocolate. Period. The flavor is dark roasted chocolate, and vanilla. Fully bodied. Creamy, silky texture. Dry finish.

nice 2 finger chocolatey head that hangs around. dark brown in color, notes of bitter dark chocolate and caramel. tastes of dark chocolate/semi-sweets, chocolate malt, roasted/toffee perhaps, and a little hoppy. alcohol is present but jsut barely. excellent brew.

22oz bomber thanks to Jah Noth. Pours dark brown with a thick frothy tan head. Aromas of Hershey’s syrup, chocolate, and chalk. Flavor is cloying chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate. Palate is full bodied. If you take this for what its worth, a chocolate beer, then it is fantastic. If you dwell over the one dementional aspects that of course you will be let down.

I find it so hard to believe this has an average above 4.0. It was all about the novelty for me, which faded quickly. Pours a deep, dark brown with a light tan head. Smells, and tastes, seriously like chocolate. Dark, bitter chocolate - an almost waxy chocolate, like a gourmet tootsie roll. Some sweet malts, but there’s so much chocolate that it just overpowers any other notes in the brew. Crazy to try, but the novelty fades quickly.

Picked up and sampled from 22-oz bomber from Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a near opaque dark brown brew with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates to a fine film Aroma of dark and milk chocolates, a hint of hazelnuts, caramel malt and some light vanilla. Taste is medium to full bodied, very little carbonation with flavors of mostly milk chocolate, vanilla, a hint to flowery hops and some licorice. Finish is mostly sweet chocolate with some light alcohol presence.

Wow, smells exactly like chocolate. This is pretty much exactly like drinking a chocalate bar, or eating a piece of chocolate cake. Amazing. It has SO much flavor, I cant see putting down more then 8oz or so. I had a 3oz sample, and it was enough. Its crazy they were able to smash that much choclate flavor into a stout. unlike any Impy made. Great stuff.

Pours a motor oil black with a finger width of slowly dissolving brown head. The aroma is flipping fantastic, WOW BIG BIG CHOCOLATE, just nothing but milk chocolate. This is by far the chocolatiest chocolate stout I have ever had, bar none, bittersweet tasty treat for the tongue, some light notes of vanilla and black licorice linger the background of the finish. Silky smooth mouth feel with light carbonation. Super tasty, super satisfying beer.
