tekhna (98), California, USA Jan 17, 2009 They weren’t kidding when they said Chocolate Stout... I drank this next to a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, and while the Brooklyn is a fine stout, you almost lose sight of the fact that it is a chocolate stout next to the Southern Tier. In my mind, Choklat is the chocolate stout against which all other chocolate stouts will be measured; fairly or unfairly.
The initial flavor is a huge hit of chocolate followed by a very sweet second taste. Not much bitterness, and little in the way of that toasted flavor that I love so much in stouts. All in all an excellent beer, although I could barely finish a glass by myself. I would almost suggest serving this like you’d serve a port; very small glasses with desert.
This sneaky bastard also hides 11% ABV, with almost no alcoholic burn. This stands out, especially compared to the Brooklyn I was tasting next to it. pjweaver (133), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 16, 2009 Absolutely delightful aroma of chocolate syrup. Sweet, smooth, and warm on the tongue, with hints of butter, dark and milk chocolate. Great palate. Much like an alcoholic Nestle Quik puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Jan 15, 2009 Bottle, batch 2. Aroma is rich, in your face chocolate, lots of "wow" factor — sweet, luscious and luxurious — but kind of one dimensional. There is a little bit of black malt in there, a touch of bitterness, but that’s all. The flavor doesn’t hold up so well, a milky concoction of white chocolate, pure cocoa powder and coffee rinds, with some lactic acid and orange skins at the back. Easy drinking. Fun to drink for sure, but with so much chocolate this doesn’t offer too much for the experienced drinker. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Jan 14, 2009 (bottle) Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is just an onslaught of cocoa, bittersweet, dark, and milk chocolate, which also yields nutty characters of peanut butter and toasted nuts. With further warming, the aroma morphs into a baked brownie. Another sniff leads to a tootsie roll aroma. The roasted malt is present, but it’s dominated by all of the chocolate. Wow, this is just fantastic. The taste is a strong flavor of milk chocolate, that is very sweet, with more of the dry dark chocolate appearing on the finish. The taste itself is far less complex than the aroma, but is still quite good. The finish is also lightly bitter with the dark chocolate and hops lingering well after drinking. The mouthfeel is medium, and the carbonation is smooth. The high ABV never makes its presence known, and is probably drowned out by the copious amounts of chocolate. This beer definitely nailed both the aroma and flavor of chocolate, and it was rather enjoyable to drink as well. timmy300 (199), bloomington, Illinois, USA Jan 14, 2009 did they forget they forget the yeast? seriously this is way sweet, but still good and very chocolaty if that is your thing.
dlclark (72), Bloomington, Illinois, USA Jan 14, 2009 On tap at Medici in Normal, IL. Very strong chocolate flavor, the alcohol is well hidden, high carbonation. Hard to believe this is beer until it kicks you in the ass. Very drinkable and hard to sip, even though you should. Excellent brew! Darkover (1308), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 13, 2009 Very dark brown with a chocolate milk colored head. Strong dark chocolate aroma. Flavor also of strong dark chocolate with a bitter finish. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jan 13, 2009 This beer is deceptive in many ways. First, it is nearly black in the glass but doesn’t look particularly great, leaving just a little tan lacing above the oil slick cap. Aromas are intense chocolate. Cocoa, chocolate chips. Then another deception on the palate, where the hops grab your attention right away while the tongue anticipates chocolate milk or cold cocoa. Some nice spicing, too, of cinnamon and nutmeg to round out the flavors. Finally, you would never guess at the 11 percent alcohol. Wow.
