SHANER4 (370), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Sep 6, 2009 bottle 22 oz. - Poured chocolate brown color with small tan head.
Aroma - soothing rich dark chocolate!!, sweet coco.
Flavor - beligan chocolate, toasted malt and touch of molasses taste.
Palate - thick oily mouthfeel and has little carbonation. Finish is mildly bitter and does have nice aftertaste.
Overall - Enjoyable brew, definite treat.
High ABV. is hardly detectable and $7.50 for 22oz. isn’t that bad! monkeychugg55 (207), Joliet, Illinois, USA Aug 26, 2009 Pours thick and black with a decent sized tan head. The aroma is loaded with tons of semi sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet at first, and fades into every kind of chocolate imaginable. All the way though the long finish, there is chocolate present. Full bodied and lightly carbonated. Excellent hiding of alcohol as usual. This was quite a treat, and was thoroughly enjoyed. BrockLanders (747), Panama City, Florida, USA Aug 23, 2009 This is a way overdue review. Dark brown pour......big tan head. Huge choco-malt nose...sweetness but not too much. Full bodied....big chocolate flavor but not cloying....enjoyed the nose during the entire glass. My wife liked it a lot more than I did but this brew was done right...good stuff. Sonicdescent (372), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2009 Now this is how to do an imperial stout. Pours black with a generous brown head. Clings to the side of the glass through the entire drink.
Smells of chocolate milk. Not complex but damn appetizing.
Tastes like a carbonated chocolate milk. The chocolate flavor is very rich and there is not much hop presence.
Mouthfeel is just perfect. Lightly carbonated and full.
As for drinkability, this is worth the price. It is just too rich flavored to drink more than one at a time, not to mention the alcohol content patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 22, 2009 Another in Southern Tier’s great Blackwater series. Bottle. My friend and I enjoyed this tasty chocolate stout on a really hot, dry night this summer. Everything about this beer is done well. The aroma is wonderful. It literally smells like a Godiva store, and the taste is not far behind. Pours dark brown with a slightly foamy head. Great stout; tasty, thick, satisfying, even refreshing. Highly recommended. DaSilky1 (1932), San Diego, California, USA Aug 21, 2009 Bottle from the old toad: dark dark brown with just a thin halo and still waters within. Super vivid dark chocolate nose, and I mean vivid! Seriously, this smells like fucking chocolate. I wonder the fuck why? Maybe a bit of cherry beneath, chocolate covered cherries, of course. Damn. Biting carbonation..super chocolatey flavors..really...its chocolate, its not beer. Shit its 11% liquid chocolate. unfortunately or not, there’s nothing else going on here but chocolate and maybe chocolate covered cherry...firm hoppy bitterness though counterbalances the chocolatey sweetness...to a point...fuck is that chocolatey tokyogoat (505), San Diego, California, USA Aug 20, 2009 Poured into an 8oz plastic hotel room cup. Pour is opaque black with a tiny tan soda-like head.
Nose is more coffee than chocolate, slight dark cocoa.
Taste is big on dark chocolate, smooth and silky like milk chocolate, but has a bit too much coffee notes. Was hoping for the chocolate bomb I had always heard about, but this is just a really solid chocolate Impy.
Slight chalky mouthfeel that is less than desirable. fcjack1 (6), Washington, USA does not count Aug 18, 2009 22 oz. from 99 Bottles. I could smell the chocolate as soon as i popped the the top. Very strong chocolate flavor. Alcohol is hidden well. Great beer!
