Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle from Sean. I had been wanting to try this beer for over a year and Sean found one somewhere months ago. Very black color with a tan head, with the smell being 100% chocolate. There isnt much else to pick up; just the usual stuff from stouts. The chocolate aroma drowns out the alcohol smell, which is a good thing. Taste is very good, thick and rich, perhaps almost too much for one person to take on. This one really surprised me because it was really good. I knew I would like it, but not as much as I did. Something I could drink every day and in turn weigh so much that I would need to be weighed at a weigh station.

Poured pitch black with small, quickly disappearing tan head. Awesome heavy aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, and more chocolate. Very potent dark chocolate flavor which completely hides the 11% alcohol. Nice thick body and very sweet finish. The only bad thing I have to say about this beer is the lacking head, but it is still one of my favorite Imperial Stouts and an excellent dessert beer.

I was not expecting to like this beer. I was fully prepared to be overwhelmed by heaps of sugar and artificial type, unbalanced flavors. Oh boy was I wrong. The initial aroma wafts around the area of the glass like straight up hersheys syrup, but get closer and it smells of heavy chocolate liquer, blackberry brandy and overripe plums. Taste is burnt toast and deep dark bittersweet cocao with a vanilla rum cake finish. Silky mouthfeel that is light in body but really comforting. I am a chocolate freak, and this is chocolate. Love it, want some more of it, will seek it out. Thanks Southern Tier. 2009 22oz.

Potent chocolate aroma you can smell from across the table. this beer is all chocolate all the time, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Alcohol nicely tucked away which is always a great thing!

bottle 22 oz. - Poured chocolate brown color with small tan head. Aroma - soothing rich dark chocolate!!, sweet coco. Flavor - beligan chocolate, toasted malt and touch of molasses taste. Palate - thick oily mouthfeel and has little carbonation. Finish is mildly bitter and does have nice aftertaste. Overall - Enjoyable brew, definite treat. High ABV. is hardly detectable and $7.50 for 22oz. isn’t that bad!

Pours thick and black with a decent sized tan head. The aroma is loaded with tons of semi sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet at first, and fades into every kind of chocolate imaginable. All the way though the long finish, there is chocolate present. Full bodied and lightly carbonated. Excellent hiding of alcohol as usual. This was quite a treat, and was thoroughly enjoyed.

This is a way overdue review. Dark brown pour......big tan head. Huge choco-malt nose...sweetness but not too much. Full bodied....big chocolate flavor but not cloying....enjoyed the nose during the entire glass. My wife liked it a lot more than I did but this brew was done right...good stuff.
