Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Pours inky black, frothy head. Nose- waves of chocolate, mix of mikly powdered chocolate smell and minor roasty notes. Taste- chocolate velvet, not in sickeningly sweet way either; chocolate is very present in a creamy choco shake kind of way. some caramel and vanilla- crazy drinkable for 11%! Mouthfeel is good- not too heavy and carbonation is mild. 1000% better than its creme brule cousin

Bottled sample via (and shared with) oakbluff. Near black in colour with moderate carbonation. Single minded aroma of chocolate milk, with a hint of booze. A bit more complex in the mouth with some chewy malts and vanilla providing some secondary notes to the huge sweet chocolate flavor. Medium bodied and quite sweet without being overly cloying. Hides its alcohol well.

(Bottle) Pours beautiful dark brown with a hazy red glow. Liquid chocolate aroma. Very creamy, full and aromatic. Both milky and bitter. A gentle malt roast backing the chocolate tones perfect. Sweetish hints of candy banana, toasted nuts and vanilla. Well-hidden alcohol but some warming notes are present. The flavour is fat chocolaty with a gentle finish of vanilla, mild hops, toasted nuts and slim roasted malt. The mouthfeel is round, light oily, light silky and soft sticky with soft carbonation. The finish is a bit harder with a light bitterness. Lingering chocolate aftertaste. Near full-bodied. Complex: no. Yummy: yes!

Poured into a tulip a black color, nice carbonation, nice little creamy dark tannish head, with some minimal tiny islands floating around. The nose is very malty, big tones of coffee/chocolate/toffee, nice vanilla tones, and some caramel. The taste is very delicious of malts, vanilla (sweetness), mostly chocolate/caramel. The alcohol is hidden very well with this brew. Full-Medium body. Very drinkable, a joy to have. Thanks Joe.

Getting notebook online. Bottle! Pours a velvety black, not much head. Aromas are coco and malt. Flavors are delicious dark and bittersweet chocolates melted down and put in a bottle!! Delicious!! Mouthfeel is lighter then you would expected! Great beer that I must find again!

Bottle, from Jimbo. Deep dark rich color. Smelled like chocolate, tasted like chocolate. Go figure. Pretty decent, although it didn’t really blow me away. But, i’m not exactly a Chocolate fan either. I will say that they did a damn good job of hiding the alcohol.

Thanks, WeeHeavySD. This tasted like beer made out of CoCo Puffs. No, not the illicit kind, but the cereal. Or maybe one of those after dinner coffee liquer chocolate drinks. Either way, pretty tasty and all kinds of strong. Pretty fubar’d when I tried it, but this sticks out.
