Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Sampled a 22oz bottle at my first imperial stout tasting. Pours a deep, oily black with only a thin white head. The aroma of chocolate is prevalent from a foot and a half away. Nose also has a little bit of coffee beans, some toast and caramel. Flavor was very sweet as well, milk chocolate, caramel with a little licorice on the end. Finish is sweet and a little bitter. Had this side by side with the Southern Tier Creme Brulee and this was clearly second place. That said, I’m sure it could stand alone if need be.

Great Stout (if you like chocolate)! Thick pour with a light brown head covering a black body. Aroma of cocoa nibs, milk and dark chcolate, a bit of swiss miss, and more chocolate. Taste is sooo much chocolate, and cocoa powder. Syrupy with light bubbles.

Dark brown-black in color with a large, light brown head with good lacing. Smells of coco puffs/swiss miss. The flavor is of swiss chocolate. Wonderful and delightful, Southern Tier Choklat is among the most enjoyable and tasty beers I’ve had the pleasure of drinking. PRAETORIAN APPROVES!!!

Wow, big chocolate aroma. The head is creamy, light brown, mostly diminishing and the color is black. The initial flavor is a little hop followed by chocolate and then a bitter in the back of the mouth. The body is medium to full, the texture creamy and the carbonation soft.

Bottle from Lone Hill. Black with a creamy tan head. Strong chocolate aroma and taste with a light dark chocolate bitterness, roasty drip coffee taste and some citrus notes. Excellent.

This is one of the most impressive chocolate stouts I’ve ever had. Basically, smelled and tasted like straight up dark chocolate. Nice body, and, lots of chocolate in the finish.

Bottle. A black beer with a big beige head. The aroma and taste is almost extreme of dark chocolate, almost to much, but still quit nise. Medium body with a chocolare finish. A chocolate stout!!!!!!!

Thanks to gunhaver for cracking this open at the RBSG 08 Grand Tasting. Pours pitch black with a light tan head. Lace is dense and massive. Aroma is out of this world. I can’t even really imagine a more intense chocolate aroma. Smells like brownie mix tastes. Flavor is a little less obtuse, with semisweet chocolate, an appreciable amount of roast, and and finish that rings of tootsie rolls. Great beer.
