Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Now this is how to do an imperial stout. Pours black with a generous brown head. Clings to the side of the glass through the entire drink. Smells of chocolate milk. Not complex but damn appetizing. Tastes like a carbonated chocolate milk. The chocolate flavor is very rich and there is not much hop presence. Mouthfeel is just perfect. Lightly carbonated and full. As for drinkability, this is worth the price. It is just too rich flavored to drink more than one at a time, not to mention the alcohol content

Another in Southern Tier’s great Blackwater series. Bottle. My friend and I enjoyed this tasty chocolate stout on a really hot, dry night this summer. Everything about this beer is done well. The aroma is wonderful. It literally smells like a Godiva store, and the taste is not far behind. Pours dark brown with a slightly foamy head. Great stout; tasty, thick, satisfying, even refreshing. Highly recommended.

Bottle from the old toad: dark dark brown with just a thin halo and still waters within. Super vivid dark chocolate nose, and I mean vivid! Seriously, this smells like fucking chocolate. I wonder the fuck why? Maybe a bit of cherry beneath, chocolate covered cherries, of course. Damn. Biting carbonation..super chocolatey flavors..really...its chocolate, its not beer. Shit its 11% liquid chocolate. unfortunately or not, there’s nothing else going on here but chocolate and maybe chocolate covered cherry...firm hoppy bitterness though counterbalances the chocolatey sweetness...to a point...fuck is that chocolatey

Poured into an 8oz plastic hotel room cup. Pour is opaque black with a tiny tan soda-like head. Nose is more coffee than chocolate, slight dark cocoa. Taste is big on dark chocolate, smooth and silky like milk chocolate, but has a bit too much coffee notes. Was hoping for the chocolate bomb I had always heard about, but this is just a really solid chocolate Impy. Slight chalky mouthfeel that is less than desirable.

Aroma of rich chocolate with roasted malt. Pours a black color with brown highlights and a thin light brown head. Very good flavor of rich chocolate and roasted malt. The mouthfeel is very soft and mellow.

Bottle@Home. Pure chocolate aroma, nothing else, just Koetjesrepen. Very black, light brown small head, good lace. Liquid chocolate bar at first and liquid bitter chocolate bar in the finish. Medium body. You must adore chocolate because that’s just it.

Bomber. Dark, near pitch pour. Creamy/frothy brown head. Black, opaque body. Big chocolate aroma with mild, underlying caramel. Faint alcohol on the nose. Big time bitter chocolate flavor with some caramel malty sweetness. Almost no alcohol flavor. Fully, viscous body with average carbonation and some chocolate oiliness. Overall a very nice beer, but it seems a bit one-sided and chocolate heavy. Lacks the complexity that I’d really like to see in a beer such as this. Some more roast, coffee, slight ash would be a nice complement to the chocolate.
