“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

It smells like chocolate and booze, which is cool, but... It’s just too sweet. As it warms, its complexity becomes higher, but it’s still just too sweet. Chocolatey, but too sweet.

Quite simply the best chocolate beer I’ve ever tried! Rich chocolate flavor and smell.

Thick black pour with two fingers of head from a bomber bottle. Tons of chocolate and cocoa aroma. Thick chocolate and molasses up front transitions to an overwhelmingly sweet finish. Good dessert but you can’t have too much of it.

Pours a jet black color with next to no lacing. Although this is overlooked due to the high abv. Smells sweet and chocolatey and does not disappoint in taste. This is rich and wonderful. Like having a hersheys kiss and a beer simultaneously. Great beer!

22 oz Bottle. Tasted on 1/8/15. Bottle from Total Wine Lewisville, TX. Bottle Date 9/14. Aroma was strong with chocolate, dark malt, like dark fruits. Tasted was great with a lot of chocolate notes, very rich & creamy, with some vanilla coming through. Overall a great chocolate stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber pour..medium black color..small mocha head..nose is chocolate...chocolate and more chocolate..reminds me of the dark chocolate wilbur buds chocolate drops which are far superior to hersheys variant, anyway this offering is smooth, decadent, chocolate rich that would pair well with any chocolate dessert, hides the abv well, not too sweet, not that bitter, solid chocolate beer that is well crafted..

Pours a deep, dark brown with a thin off white head which disappears quickly.....aroma of dark chocolate milk.....taste is chocolate. Dark chocolate. Booze is well hidden, tails off into a bit of mild bitterness. Nice.

Pours black with a small tan head. The aroma is all chocolate, sweet chocolate. Taste follows the nose, milk chocolate with a bit of roasted malt at the end. A lot of reviews for other stouts say chocolate but this is the real deal, really good just hoping it doesn’t get tiresome as I keep drinking.

Draft at Flying Saucer Nashville. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Leaves lots of lacing. Massive chocolate notes which curl into my nostrils like a docile, sleepy kitten which as we all know don’t really exist in nature. Big bitter chocolate which is to say it’s really good chocolate and doesn’t taste like a Hershey’s kiss or some such garbage. The chocolate lingers on the finish making this the perfect after dinner beer. It is a bit dangerous though since it hides it’s booze so well. Nice!
