“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2016 Pours black with a one finger tan head with excellent lacing. Aroma is of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, vanilla, molasses, sweet malts, caramel, spicy chocolate, and some light booze has it warms. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi bitter, slightly dry, long, lingering finish. Overall, a tasty, pretty complex imperial stout that had some nice dark and milk chocolate notes.

Bottle from Total Wine. Black with a little tan head. Chocolate, chocolate chocolate. Smooth, slightly creamy, did I mention chocolatey?

Poured from the bomber. Nice thick head, the aroma of cocoa is hard to mistake. Flavor is all about the cocoa. Nice bitterness like chewing dark chocolate. Palate is clean and thin. Finishes with a cocoa powered type residue, that is not offensive. Overall wow, what a great beer, I haven’t had anything like this since rouges chocolate beer.

Pours thick and black with barely a bubble on top, just a thin film of tan foam which disappears completely. The aroma is remarkable - it’s like a chocolate fountain. Flavor is also very chocolate, more dark and bitter than the smell would indicate, and warmed by some booze showing through. Finish is semi-bitter and lingering. Very good, as many of ST’s heavily flavored brews.

(Southern Tier Blackwater Series Choklat) Bottle 650 ml at home, vintage ’13, served into a snifter, ABV 10% Black coloured body, small brown head on top, with good retention. 4 Aroma is pure chocolate, all kinds of it, milky chocolate, dark, you name it, cocoa powder, light alcohol. Taste also heavy on the chocolate, fudge, light roasted malts on the finish, well hidden alcohol here for the most part -hints of it every now and then-, coal, cocoa. Full body, soft carbonation, smooth on the palate. Fantastic stout, pure chocolate in my glass.

Another incredible beer from Southern Tier. Not quite as good as warlock, but better then creme brûlée. Quite a bit like High Water's Campfire Stout, but even a bit more flavorful. Pours a deep black with a tan head. Smells amazing, or chocolate, vanilla, marshmallows and creme. Taste is sweet, French vanilla, marshmallows and some coffee and spices in the finish. Had in the bottle.

DATE TASTED: December 19, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Duvel tulip... OCCASION: finished the first round of gift wrapping... APPEARANCE: black as, er, Blackwater (?), with a thin, brown head that shows a creamy, resilient half-finger staying power; lacing slides in sheets... AROMA: overpowering sweetness born of chocolate, toasted malts, licorice, toffee, and subdued hops--but holy, heavenly chocolate, suggesting confectioner’s kitchens or the M&M Mars factory... PALATE: creamy as the head suggests; full-bodied, warming and active at the teeth...the aftertaste is formidable and welcome... TASTE: chocolate, sweet and pronounced, with toffee and vanilla...robust is an understatement...like a cake or mousse liquefied.... the toasted elements evoke a smoked cheese,,,... OVERALL: I had this on draft at The Corner Pub, and I had to revisit it...at home from a 22 oz. bomber, it only stands taller and more formidable, encompassing the palate and demanding every inch of attention with each sip--a BIG beer... phenolic in a highly drinkable,fashion...

This is a very smooth and drinkable Stout. Pours dark with little foam. Great after dinner beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
