KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 26, 2008 Dark color. Smell of chocolate, hops, malt, caramel, minor nuts and chocolate cake. Taste of chocolate, caramel, hops, malt, cake batter, alcohol, toffee and some nuttiness at the end. Very good! ccoburn (22), Leawood, Kansas, USA May 25, 2008 Pours black with a tan head. Normal imperial stout appearance. The aroma is just like a cardboard can of nestle chocolate milk mix. Can’t pull anything out of it other than that. Maybe if it was the dark chocolate version which to the best of my knowledge, does not exist. By now the head died from a quarter inch to a slim film on the brew. Taste... wow. Not as much of a beer as it is a dark chocolate powder and water mix. Is this really 11 percent abv? I’m getting zero alcohol out of this beer. Brilliant. Just Brilliant. This is insane. Hence the spelling of the name. I now regret only getting one bottle of this from out of state. If i had only known, I would have bought more to show my friends that are non-believers. I can’t believe what I have here. I wouldn’t say this is the best Imperial Stout ever, but there is another category for it, and this puts a new standard for them all. Of all of the Southern Tier brews, this is their masterpiece by far. The rating needs to be one more point above 99. This is just magic. Tweety (336), Vancouver, Washington, USA May 22, 2008 Bomber. This one pours basically black with a dark tan head. Aroma is, well, chocolate. Very dark chocolate to be precise, with a touch of sweetness and an undertone of alcohol. It tastes a little like a mocha with the heavy chocolate and a touch of espresso on the backside. Really really tasty. FunkyBrewster (435), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 22, 2008 Updated: May 27, 2008Sweet sweet aroma. Smells like I just opened a bottle of chocolate syrup and stuck my nose in. Very malt, and maybe a hint of fruit. Dark brown nearly black color. Extremely sweet chocolate flavor, sweet on the start and a nice dark chocolate bitter finish. Very full bodied and thick as can be. There are some notes of alcohol in the finish, but not enough to make it unpleasant, and after all, it is 11% so I can forgive. This is a dessert beer through and through. glkaiser (1150), Seattle, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 taste from 22oz bottle thanks to after4ever(or maybe Colin?). Almost perfect aroma of pure, high quality chocolate. Wow. Tons of bitter chocolate flavor in the taste. A little fruity. Reminded me of chocolate sauce after being mixed with a little bit of cherry juice in an ice cream sundae. But, a 1oz sample is more than enough to say "wow, cool" and then move on. Interesting, but not very approachable and wish they had accomplished that type of chocolate flavor with a less intense beer. Viper666 (613), Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada May 21, 2008 Bouteille 650ml, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. Thanks, Colin! Pours black. Headless, laceless (after a few seconds). Gargantuan chocolate nose; just ridiculous. Starts off like rich dark belgian chocolate--ya know, the antioxidant kind. As it warms it gets more into tootie roll/milk chocolate territory. Creamy body, like chocolate milk. Everything about this beer is decadent and overwhelming. 6 of us split it and everyone at some point uttered some variant of "tooooo much." But at the same time everyone enjoyed it. A little hot and twangy at the end. It would be shocking if it weren’t at this abv. Great stuff. For now and then. ElJefe (553), Rochester, New York, USA May 20, 2008 Pitch black with a thick brown head. Aroma just screaming with chocolate - lots of cocoa and dark chocolate notes accompanied by some notes of vanilla and light roastiness. Flavor is also heavily chocolatey, with some roasted nut flavors, moderate hop bitterness in the finish, along with coffe and bittersweet chocolate. This one is for chocolate lovers.
