aroma: deep rich dark chocolate. some sweet malts and classy booze. app: black. Flavor: just the like the seed from the loins of willy wonka himself! great chocolate. very nice. very 1D though. I would have balanced it with a hint of smoke. but great. palate: fine OA: shameful childhood memories mixed with great rich chocolate! amazing. Hoptagon (132), Arlington, Virginia, USA May 18, 2008 22 oz. Bottle. General appearance of the beer is rich brown/black with a fairly thin tan head. Snifter really accentuates the potent cocoa and chocolate aroma. Not much else in the nose, but lots of fairly sweet scented chocolate. First touch on the tongue is also heavily chocolate flavored although not too sweet, definitely more of a bitter or semisweet chocolate character. The chocolate is followed up by some intense doses of hop bitterness. Almost to the point where it seems a bit harsh for a beer designed to accentuate and display the flavors of chocolate. Flavor also shows some burnt malt character. Mouthfeel is medium thick with a soft but persistent carbonation that is just about right for this style. Finish is short and perhaps a bit too bitter. Chocolate character is all upfront in this one with more traditional imperial stout characters dominating on the back half. At 11% the alcohol is amazingly well hidden. Jan Primus (160), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 18, 2008 Pours a typical imperial stout black with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate...taste of milk-chocolate, with a creamy mouthfeel. I found the chocolate to be more of the milk-chocolate variety and it didn’t balance very nicely imho...I’ll stick with their Java stout instead. turbo (1254), Arizona, USA May 16, 2008 Poured black with a nice thick head.
Aroma is sweet milk chocolate and chocolate milk.
Rich and thick flavor of chocolate malts and roast.
Its all about the chocolate here! Good beer! hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 15, 2008 These guys do not play when it comes to throwing in adjuncts. Geez. Soooo much chocolate. Bittersweet chocolates on the nose with an undercurrent of some hops. Flavor is nicely complex. Woody and charry. Of course there’s chocolate. Nice full mouthfeel with a creamy finish. Good beer, but I feel the overdoing of chocolate is just a little too much here, but it still very tasty. ketchepillar (475), Viña del Mar, Chile May 15, 2008 Wow, I’ve never drank a fudge brownie before. Not much else to say. Really tasty. Don’t want it too often, but when I do have it, It’ll be delicious. It is a little chalky (not bad), as crowderm stated. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany May 15, 2008 Pours a deep, dark black with very little head. Wow, the aroma is straight fudge brownie. Maybe a little bit of aged wood. The flavor is pretty similar...geez..they really nailed the chocolate flavor here, ridiculous. Maybe some nice caramel malts in support, and slight chalky flavor, but almost totally chocolate. The palate is nice and dense, although not quite as creamy as the best Imperial Stouts. Delicious beer. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA May 15, 2008 Bottle. Body-hazy dark brown with a razor thin medium ring of bubbles. Nose-wood, big chocolate like a melted chocolate bar, chocolate cake, bittersweet milk chocolate. Taste-coco beans, hot chocolate, medium malty, bitter on the backend, milky, creamy, lactic, light sweetened creamed coffee, spicy hazel nut cream. Some may say that the chocolate is too upfront and over used in this beer, and they would be wrong. This bad boy is nice.
