Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Wow. It pours pitch black, dark and very opaque. Only tiny little bubbles are visible near the sides of the glass. A tan foamy head is formed by these tiny bubbles. The head slowly recedes as I drink, leaving nice lace patterns on the glass. The aroma catches the nose as it is poured. It is strong and full of dark and milk chocolate. The flavor is a bitter sweet chocolate with complementary chocolate and caramel malts. The hops add there own bitter complexity and play off the dark chocolate wonderfully. The palate is medium to full bodied, slick on the tongue and a little bit oily. This is an outstanding and decadent imperial stout that has a well hidden 11% abv that can sneak up on you.

Bottle. Been holding on to this one, but now that I see ST has made it to the Twin Cities, I need hold on to it no more. Literally smells like chocolate milk. Don’t smell the alcohol. Black body, Tan head, thin, large bubble. Very chocolaty. Tastes like it smells, but this time you can detect the alcohol. You should at 11%, but it doesn’t taste that strong. I’m hoping this brew’s not going to keep me up all night. Probably not the best beer to pair with a steak. This brew is definitely a specialty beer for a special occasion. Could work as a dessert beer, perhaps as the dessert itself. Would also be great for a true chocolate lover. Very good. Who thought alcoholic chocolate milk could be so good. I bet my kids would love this! A bomber is a lot of beer to drink with a chocolate monster like this! You could probably top this with whipped cream and call it dessert.

Pours deep black with ruby edges with a one finger mocha head that didn’t linger too long. Lacing is minimal and this is pretty standard looking as stouts go. Whoa! This smells like a big glass of chocolate milk. You can make out the slightest sweet malt aroma and a bit of an alcohol nose tingling. But, honestly, it’s all about the chocolate. Initial taste is the chocolate, milk, dark, and any other chocolate you can imagine. However, there is a big malt and dark fruit presence that follows the sweetness and gives way to a pleasant hop bitterness and alcohol burn in the aftertaste. Chocolate is still the dominant player in the taste, but there is quite a bit of balance. Super thick mouthfeel that leaves the chocolate malt coating the mouth completely. This is an excellent Impy Stout and definitely the top chocolate stout I’ve tried to date. If you like chocolate sweetness in your stouts, this is damn near nirvana!

Open this one up and take a long smell. You will think hershy bar right away. The flavor takes over your palet and the finish is amazing. You will notice the intense dark color of this stout and the minimal brown head that sticks to the glass. With the fullness of the body you will almost believe you are drinking liquid chocolate!

Bottle courtesy of Grub: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium dirty brown foamy head with good retention and some nice lacing notes. Aroma of pure black chocolate is dominating but is so enjoyable at the same time. Taste is a mix between some black chocolate from Belgium or Switzerland with some sweetness reminiscent of lactose. Full creamy body with a somewhat oily texture, almost like liquid chocolate, with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol which is surprising considering the ABV of 11%. This beer is one of my new guilty pleasures.

A Mes rate: bottle at Chris O’s Ha Ha Ha Ha Gimme the Cheese Tasting.
What a cracker! Choklat brown colour with a very good tan head. Aroma is like opening a tin of Cadbury’s Drinking Powder and breaking the seal for the first time. It smells EXACTLY like it. Something very comforting and reminiscent about it. It’s certainly glorious. Flavour, damn this is good stuff. Beautiful American style chocolate. Hershey’s pretty much. So little beer character in it but I’m really loving it. It’s way over the top and I’m certain I couldn’t drink a full bottle of it but DAMN it’s good. Utterly adorable chocolate with a nice bitterness on the finish. Very sweet, very thick, close to cloying but sick as f**k and I love it. Perverse but excellent.

Oh yeah, where the motherfunk is the 11%??? It’s just not there at all...

Bottle courtesy of eaglefaan538. Aroma was like just opening a hersy’s chocolate bar, outstanding. Black body with tan head. Chocolate on the nose then a creamy milk chocolate flavor only thing I could say to Turbo is man is all about the chocolate and great brew. Smooth on the palate with a dry coco aftertaste lingering. Thanks Brian. Also got one from SS Winter 07, So thanks to John Adam 2002 that bottle will be opened at the hellbillys tasteing next in May.
