thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Mar 21, 2008 This bottled brew from a rating party poured a small sized head of foamy fine to large sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a dark brown colored body and a poor lacing. The strong aroma was all chocolate/cocoa. The thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a strong chocolate/cocoa aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of malt and chocolate/cocoa. A decent one but not one that I would consider drinking again too sweet and wya too much chocolate for my palate although it smells wonderful. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA Mar 21, 2008 An awesome beer that I was lucky to try. Great aroma, chocolate and malts. Taste is hugely chocolatly though a nice roasted malt taste shows through. Ending was of a dark chocolate, ie: slightly bitter with a slight sweetness accented by some malts. I’m a great fan of this beer. TheEnemy (422), Chicago, USA Mar 21, 2008 22oz bottle. Well, they sure aren’t kidding about the chocolate, the aroma of which instantly permeates the room once you start pouring. Said pour produces a solid dark-brown with a tight foamy creamy head. A closer inspection of the aroma is still overwhelmingly chocolate, though it has a slight artificial quality to it. Aroma also gives off a good dose of sweet sugary malt. A sip first reveals -- surprise! -- lots of dark chocolate, though the artificial quality that showed up in the aroma is thankfully absent in the flavor. Dry, roasty, slightly bitter grain shows up next, only to be tempered by a welcome dose of sweet caramel-like malt and a dash of vanilla. Alcohol shows up just enough to warm and not enough to overwhelm. Velvety-smooth, thick, creamy and slightly flat palate. Yeah, this is good stuff even if they almost go into overkill with the chocolate. Well worth the praise it has received here and elsewhere. LeMunche (66), Orland Park, Illinois, USA Mar 20, 2008 Overpowering chocholate. This one is almost to the point that I wouldnt call it beer. However, the chocholate is of high quality, and the brew is tasty so it gets good marks. Tastes good and gets you drunk. JAXSON (229), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 19, 2008 Draft at Capone’s. Deep brown to ebony with a soft, foamy caramel head. Big nose of melted chocolate, and a nutty roastiness. Flavor was alot of rich chocolate, much more than I’ve ever gotten in an imperial stout. Pretty impressive in that regard. Despite these merits, I felt sick and sluggish toward the end of my 9oz. snifter of this. That, to me, is the eternal downfall of most imperial stouts: I just don’t have it in me to finish the blessed thing.
There should be a ratings criteria for "drinkability" or "does it make you feel sick" or something to that effect. I suppose those points should be deducted from the overall score if the beer TASTES good but makes you feel sick due to how heavy it is, but I’m just saying. KawaBomber (193), New Jersey, USA Mar 18, 2008 Updated: Mar 20, 200822oz. Bottle: Pours the darkest of brown w/ just a wisp of a brown head. A swirl of the glass reveals a small brown head that recedes quickly. Aroma yields mostly roasted malts, milk choc., some dark fruitiness & a slight bit of alcohol. Flavor: Dark roasted malts quickly take a back seat to sweet chocolate fading into a slighty bitter hoppiness towards the end. Smooth brew, nice velvety mouthfeel w/ perfect carbonation. Also gives that nice warming feeling as it travels to the belly. A quick check of the bottle reveals 11%, nary a hint of that in the flavor. I had high expectations for this one & it didn’t disappoint...yum!.............**Draft: This is even better then the bottled version. You can smell the sweet chocolate aroma from across the table, it’s just insane! All the strengths seem amplified on tap. Wow!!
AR: 10 App: 5 Flav: 9 Pal: 5 Ov: 17 Tot: 4.6** Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA Mar 18, 2008 What a delicious brew this one is..its loaded with rich dark chocolate taste, a velvety mouthfeel, wonderful aroma and enough alcohol to make you wet your britches if you aint careful.....I loved it.. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Mar 17, 2008 Pours a truly opaque brown/black with a thin tan head. I swear, you can literally smell this from across the room. Aroma is chocolate-soda like...very reminiscent of some soda I had as a child, but richer and more flavorful. Taste is initially roasted malts, but turns quickly to sweet chocolate...some bitter chocolate and bittering hops as well, and I’d have to say some milk and nut flavor in there as well. There is a bit of alcohol evident as well, which made me look at the bottle and subsequently open my eyes pretty wide when I saw this was 11% ABV (I was guessing 6.5-7%). Surprisingly bitter aftertaste took me for a loop. Palate is very good...goes down like smooth Nestle Quik (albeit not as chuggable, due to a bit more carbonation than I’d like to see). If you’re looking for lots of dimension, this isn’t a great beer for you, but if you’re looking for a good chocolate bomb...head here; I’ve yet to have anything more chocolatey!
